Former Bayern Munich chief executive Oliver Kahn has warned Julian Nagelsmann to carefully consider the risks of taking over at Manchester United, citing the club’s lack of managerial stability in recent years.
Nagelsmann has emerged as a potential candidate to replace Michael Carrick, who is facing pressure following a run of poor results at Old Trafford.
However, Kahn believes Manchester United’s volatile managerial environment could pose a significant challenge for the German coach, particularly given his limited experience managing clubs in foreign leagues.
Speaking to Sky Germany, Kahn said: “From his perspective, it’s not an easy situation. He isn’t someone with extensive experience at the very highest level, particularly when it comes to foreign clubs.
“The Premier League and Manchester United haven’t exactly been known for their managerial stability in recent years.”
The former Germany goalkeeper also urged Nagelsmann to assess his next career move carefully, pointing to the challenges he has faced during his spells at Bayern Munich and with the German national team.
Kahn questioned whether Manchester United would offer the right environment for Nagelsmann to continue developing as a coach or expose him to another high-pressure situation.
“He really has to ask himself: What should my next step be? Does it have to be the right move? Or do I immediately tie myself to an enormous risk like Manchester United, where virtually every manager has sooner or later failed in recent years?” Kahn said.
Nagelsmann’s coaching approach has often focused on developing players and building teams, raising questions about whether Manchester United would provide the patience and stability needed for his methods.
Kahn acknowledged the challenges of managing elite teams but stressed that Nagelsmann should consider where his strengths would be best suited.
“Bayern Munich and the national team were already major challenges for him. You have to think carefully about where your strengths lie and which club you can genuinely help,” he said.
Despite his concerns, Kahn said the final decision rested with Nagelsmann, whom he described as a coach capable of building and developing a club and its team.
“I believe Julian is someone who can build and develop a club and a team. Whether Manchester United is the right next step for him is something only he can decide,” Kahn concluded.
