A single AI chipmaker's mega-round accounted for the vast majority of tracked crypto venture capital funding this week.
Tenstorrent, an artificial intelligence chip design company, raised $1.5 billion in a funding round reported on October 24. The round accounted for roughly 85.1% of total crypto venture capital funding tracked for the week, according to crypto.news and The Cryptonomist EN. The scale of the deal dwarfed every other transaction counted in the same weekly tally.
Tenstorrent is not a blockchain or crypto-native company in the traditional sense. It designs semiconductors aimed at artificial intelligence workloads. Its inclusion in crypto venture capital tracking reflects a broader pattern where funds that historically backed blockchain startups now place large bets on AI infrastructure. The line between the two sectors has grown increasingly blurred over the past two years.
Whop, the second company named in this week's reporting, secured $200 million in its own funding round. No additional detail about Whop's business model or the identity of its investors was included in the available reporting. The raise nonetheless stood out as one of the larger deals outside the Tenstorrent round.
The concentration of capital in a single transaction raises questions about how representative weekly VC tallies are of the broader crypto funding landscape. When one deal captures the overwhelming share of recorded investment, the remaining activity across the sector can appear smaller than it actually is. Analysts who track these figures often caution against reading too much into a single week's numbers for this reason.
Crypto venture funding has moved in cycles since the market downturn of 2022. Periods of reduced investor appetite have alternated with renewed interest tied to infrastructure buildouts, stablecoin adoption, and institutional custody services. Mega-rounds like Tenstorrent's can temporarily distort those trend lines, making it harder to gauge whether capital is flowing toward blockchain-specific projects or toward adjacent technology sectors that merely overlap with crypto-focused funds.
The pairing of an AI hardware company with a smaller, less-detailed raise like Whop's illustrates how diverse the venture capital pool backing this ecosystem has become. Investors who once focused narrowly on tokens, exchanges, and decentralized finance protocols are increasingly diversifying into compute infrastructure, AI tooling, and consumer platforms that may only loosely intersect with blockchain technology.
This shift matters for anyone trying to track where crypto-adjacent capital is actually going. A single outsized round can mask whether smaller, more traditional crypto startups are still attracting meaningful investment. It can also signal that some of the largest pools of venture money associated with the crypto industry are being redirected toward the broader AI boom, rather than toward blockchain-native development.
Market Impact
A funding week dominated by one non-blockchain company suggests investor capital tied to crypto-focused funds is increasingly flowing toward AI infrastructure rather than purely crypto-native projects. This could affect how smaller blockchain startups compete for attention and funding in coming quarters, since large allocators appear willing to commit billions to adjacent technology sectors.
For market watchers, the skew also complicates efforts to measure genuine momentum in blockchain-specific venture activity. A single mega-round can overstate aggregate funding totals for a given week while actual deal flow for crypto-native startups like Whop remains comparatively modest. Future weekly tallies will need closer scrutiny to separate AI-driven capital movements from blockchain sector investment proper.
Tenstorrent's $1.5 billion raise and Whop's $200 million round together illustrate how venture capital tied to the crypto industry is increasingly spilling into adjacent technology fields, a trend worth watching as future funding reports emerge.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Tenstorrent and why is its funding round linked to crypto venture capital?
Tenstorrent is an artificial intelligence chip design company. Its $1.5 billion round was counted within weekly crypto venture capital tracking because some of the same investment funds back both blockchain and AI infrastructure companies.
How much did Whop raise and what does the company do?
Whop secured $200 million in its funding round, according to the same reporting. No further operational details about the company were included in the available coverage.
Why did Tenstorrent's round make up such a large share of weekly crypto VC funding?
Tenstorrent's $1.5 billion raise was exceptionally large compared with other deals tracked that week, which pushed its share of the total to roughly 85.1% even though it is not a blockchain-native company.
Does this mean crypto-native startups are receiving less funding overall?
Not necessarily. A single large round can distort weekly totals without reflecting a broader decline in funding for traditional blockchain projects, so longer-term trends should be monitored before drawing conclusions.
