North Korea has advanced its ballistic missile systems and established mass production lines for strike drones with technical and operational assistance from Russia, The New York Times reported.
Moscow is transferring military technologies, telemetry feedback, and operational expertise to Pyongyang in exchange for North Korean ammunition, labor, and combat troops deployed in support of Russia’s war effort in Ukraine.

In early October, North Korea conducted a test launch of a tactical ballistic missile that Pyongyang claimed is capable of delivering a nuclear warhead.
South Korean and Japanese defense tracking systems recorded the munition traveling approximately 700 kilometers (435 miles), whereas state media in Pyongyang asserted the missile achieved an operational flight range of 1,000 kilometers (621 miles).
Departing from routine diplomatic protocols that traditionally limit Seoul to brief statements of condemnation following Northern missile tests, South Korea conducted its first operational test of a domestically developed hypersonic ballistic missile five days later.
The test launch was observed in person by South Korean President Lee Jae-myung, reflecting growing institutional concern in Seoul regarding Pyongyang’s accelerated technological timeline.
Russian combat feedback, accuracy, and mass drone assembly
Western intelligence and defense analysts observe that Pyongyang is leveraging Russian operational data detailing how North Korean weapons perform in real combat environments against modern Western-supplied air defense systems.

Russian Drone Hits Vinnytsia Apartment Block, 6 Injured
A Russian drone has struck a Vinnytsia five-story apartment block, injuring six, destroying four flats, and forcing an elderly care home evacuation.
Defense analyst Anton Ponomarenko noted that telemetry and performance feedback provided by the Russian military have enabled North Korean engineers to refine the guidance accuracy and terminal maneuverability of tactical ballistic missiles, increasing the conventional and nuclear strike risk posed to South Korea.
Concurrently, Moscow has assisted Pyongyang in establishing domestic industrial manufacturing lines for loitering munitions and strike drones.
Pyongyang has adapted lessons from the armed conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, where cost-effective unmanned platforms have repeatedly saturated and depleted advanced, high-cost air defense networks.
During North Korean military drills conducted last month, an integrated swarm of unmanned aerial vehicles conducted synchronized saturation strikes against an island target while cruise and ballistic missiles launched simultaneous strikes from multiple vectors.
Defense specialists emphasize that countering coordinated drone-swarm and missile saturation tactics could compel South Korea and its regional allies to overhaul integrated air and missile defense postures at substantial financial cost.
Expanding military alliance and troop deployments
The reciprocal technology transfers underscore the deepening military axis between Moscow and Pyongyang following the signing of a comprehensive strategic partnership agreement during Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to Pyongyang in June 2024, which codified a mutual defense clause.
In a birthday dispatch addressed to Putin on Oct. 7, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un reaffirmed “invariable support” for Moscow, characterizing Russia’s war in Ukraine as a “sacred war of justice” and pledging to expand bilateral strategic alignment.
The partnership encompasses significant conventional transfers and frontline force commitments. North Korea has supplied artillery munitions and ballistic missiles to the Russian military while deploying an estimated 14,000 to 15,000 military personnel to Russian, including roughly 10,000 combat infantry and 1,000 military engineers deployed in the Kursk region.
According to casualty assessments compiled by South Korea’s National Intelligence Service (NIS), approximately 6,000 North Korean soldiers deployed in support of Russian operations have been killed or wounded in combat, reinforcing Pyongyang’s reliance on Russian technological reciprocity to compensate for troop and material losses.
