Jerry Jones never stops surprising people, or at least his Dallas Cowboys do. After weeks without any real improvement from their defense, the solution was not to fire defensive coordinator Christian Parker, but instead to make an emergency call to his “mentor.”
Mike Pettine, who hired Parker and brought him in to work with him during his time with the Green Bay Packers from 2019 to 2020, is coming out of retirement to join Dallas’ defensive staff, according to ESPN NFL Nation’s Todd Archer.

After five games, the Dallas Cowboys’ defense is in a critical situation. The team is allowing 27.2 points per game and ranks last in the NFL after giving up 168.4 rushing yards per contest.
The lack of answers was on full display in last Thursday’s 24-16 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, when Dallas was unable to contain Bucky Irving, a performance that sparked heavy criticism and was labeled “embarrassing” for the franchise.
With the defense struggling, Christian Parker will now receive support from an experienced coach in Mike Pettine, who knows his work firsthand after hiring and mentoring him during their time together with the Green Bay Packers.
Pettine’s arrival is an effort to bring experience and new solutions to a defensive unit that has become one of Dallas’ biggest concerns during the early stages of the season.
