Oct. 23—CLEMSON — The Tigers may be gearing up to play their most important game of the season.
Clemson (4-2, 2-1 ACC) is set to take on Virginia Tech (5-2, 2-2) on Saturday at Memorial Stadium. After emerging from the bye week with a 37-0 win over Charleston Southern, everything the Tigers want to achieve in 2026 is technically possible. That all goes away if they can't handle the Hokies.
"This is where we hope to be at this point. Hope to be one of these teams that has a shot, and that's where we are," Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said. "This time last year, we weren't in this position. Proud of the guys and our team that's competed."
Key players
Clemson
Tait Reynolds, QB: Reynolds has been under a microscope this season, not unlike most college quarterbacks, but is it really fair to judge the freshman so harshly? No, his six turnovers and one touchdown this season don't look good on paper, but he's a first-year player who has been thrown into the fire after missing his senior year of high school football. Well, Clemson doesn't have time to consider whether criticism of Reynolds is misguided. He's the starter, and time is of the essence with six crucial games to go. He needs to step up and produce now, especially with Christopher Vizzina's murky injury situation (and Trent Pearman throwing two picks against Charleston Southern) leaving the Tigers with no other options.
T.J. Moore, WR: Coming into his junior year after two productive seasons as an underclassman, Moore was heralded as one of Clemson's best players in 2026. He hasn't produced like expected so far, and his drop-laden performance against Charleston Southern was called his worst game as a Tiger by Swinney. Moore will get an opportunity to recoup some favor among Clemson fans this weekend if he makes an impact.
Virginia Tech
Ethan Grunkemeyer, QB: Clemson is familiar with Grunkemeyer. A backup at Penn State to start 2025, he took over for starter Drew Allar after Allar broke his ankle midseason. Grunkemeyer ended up beating the Tigers in the 2025 Pinstripe Bowl, throwing for a (at the time) career-high 260 yards and two touchdowns. He's thrived since following former Penn State coach James Franklin to Virginia Tech, throwing for 1,984 yards and 15 touchdowns so far this season.
Que'Sean Brown, WR: Fans of the ACC (particularly those living in the tri-county area of South Florida) may find it blasphemous that Swinney spoke of Brown and Miami's Malachi Toney in the same sentence. Swinney clarified later: He's not saying Brown is the same caliber as Toney, he's simply saying Virginia Tech uses its senior wideout similar to how Miami uses Toney, moving him in and out of the slot and frequently drawing up gadget plays to get Brown the ball in space. It's worked to the tune of 616 yards and three touchdowns this season. Clemson is also familiar with Brown. He torched the Tigers for 80 yards and two touchdowns with Duke last season in a 46-45 win over Clemson.
Key matchup
Will Clemson try to fight fire with fire or will it lean on its secondary and try to win a low-scoring slugfest?
Those appear to be the Tigers' two most realistic paths to winning the game.
Let's start with the fire: Virginia Tech has an explosive pass offense. The Hokies rank ninth in the nation for passing plays of 10 or more yards and seventh for completions of 20-plus yards. Meanwhile, Clemson ranks 121st and 111th in those categories.
It might seem foolish to think Clemson could match up against the Hokies through the air, until you consider Virginia Tech has the 95th passing defense in the nation. Its secondary has allowed 67 passing plays of 10-plus yards and 22 passes for 20 yards or more this season.
As for the slugfest, it may be a more realistic option. Clemson's passing defense is 38th in the country. The Tigers held offensive powerhouse Miami to 227 yards passing, its second lowest total in 2026 (Wake Forest held the Hurricanes to 220 air yards).
If Clemson can limit Virginia Tech's passing attack and make it a game late, then the Tigers might be able to pull ahead by running the ball against a worn-down defense. The only hangup is that the Hokies are incredibly effective at stopping the run and rank No. 10 among Division I FBS teams for least average rushing yards allowed.
Still, an ugly game late isn't the worst situation for the Tigers. Just ask North Carolina. Or Cal.
Key storyline
So, is this the most important game for Clemson in 2026? If your measure is every other game mattering less if the Tigers lose, then yes, it is.
Clemson is one of four teams with one ACC loss. It already beat another, UNC, and won't play the other two, SMU and Wake Forest. The Tigers already played (and lost to) the ACC's only undefeated team, Miami.
That's all to say this: If Clemson were to somehow win out its final six games against five ACC opponents and South Carolina, a spot in the ACC Championship Game is technically possible.
But as soon as the Tigers lose, the dream is dead.
Swinney said Clemson's goal is to be "in the mix" come November. It would be a disappointment if the Tigers fell on their faces two weeks before the calendar even turns. Lose this weekend, and there won't be another game on the schedule that truly matters until the Gamecocks come to town on Nov. 28.
With all that in mind, Saturday's game feels like a make-or-break moment for the 2026 season.
Final prediction: Virginia Tech 21, Clemson 16
It's a slugfest, but Virginia Tech is just explosive enough to potentially shatter the Tigers' hopes for the remainder of the year.
Clemson's defense keeps it tight, containing Grunkemeyer and Brown to make it a 16-14 Clemson lead entering the fourth quarter. The Tigers offense struggles on the ground but musters their first passing touchdown since Sept. 19. Lou Groza Award candidate Nolan Hauser knocks down three field goals to give Clemson a late advantage.
Unfortunately for the Tigers, the secondary's one missed assignment of the game ends up being a backbreaker, as Grunkemeyer finds Brown for a long touchdown midway through the fourth. Clemson is forced to move through the air on two final drives and can't, going three-and-out twice to let the win slip away.
The biggest challenge for the rest of the season is finding something to play for and keeping the team together despite knowing Clemson is fully out of the mix by October's end for a second-straight season.
