Award-winning South African actress Dawn Thandeka King is set to lead the cast of Mzansi Magic’s upcoming drama "Inyosi", a 13-part series exploring family power struggles, cultural expectations and a decades-old secret with consequences for generations.
King, known for her roles in "Shaka iLembe", "Diep City" and other popular local productions, takes on the role of Mabongi Mageza-Ngcobo, a successful businesswoman and widow whose quest to build a better life for herself and her family comes with a complicated past.
Joining King in the cast are Thembsie Matu, Kwenzo Ngcobo and newcomer Kethukuthula Jele, who makes her television debut in the production.
Dawn Thandeka King takes on a complex role
In "Inyosi", King plays Mabongi, the chief executive of Ekhaya Events and Catering and a devoted mother to her three children: Nsika, played by Kwanele Mkhize; Kwanele, played by Toka Mtabane, and Samukelo, played by Nandipa Khubone.
While Mabongi has established herself as a successful businesswoman, questions about the future leadership of her company threaten to disrupt the family dynamic.
As the possibility of succession becomes a reality, her children begin competing to prove themselves worthy of taking over the business, setting the stage for tensions over ambition, power and their mother's legacy.
However, the family's internal struggles are only one part of Mabongi's story. Her past holds a secret that could have far-reaching consequences for those who come after her.
A past marked by rejection and humiliation
Thirty years earlier, Mabongi's life took a devastating turn when she visited Bheki, the man she loved, alongside her family to tell him that she was pregnant.
Instead of acknowledging the child as his, Bheki said he intended to marry another woman, whom he considered pure and untainted.
The rejection was particularly painful for Mabongi, who had participated in Umhlanga, a traditional rite of passage where young women are taught cultural values through song, dance and mentorship.
Her humiliation deepened when the young women she had attended the ceremony with turned their backs on her.
Desperate to win back her lover and change her circumstances, Mabongi sought help from Sunday Nkabinde, a powerful spiritual healer played by Zakhele Msibi. Sunday is known to viewers from "Isibaya".
She initially approached him to find umuthi wenhlanhla to win Bheki back. Instead, Sunday offered her an isthwalo that promised to change her fortunes.
Mabongi accepted, unaware that the decision would carry consequences extending beyond her own lifetime.
Kethukuthula Jele makes her television debut
The mystery surrounding Mabongi's past begins to unravel through Buhle, played by Jele, who joins the production as a newcomer to the Mzansi Magic screen.
Buhle begins investigating the origins of a distinctive honeycomb-shaped mark on her back, which is linked to a decades-old secret that is finally coming to light.
As the story unfolds, the series raises questions about the price of ambition, the weight of cultural expectations and the consequences of choices made in moments of desperation.
What exactly did Mabongi agree to, and what sacrifices will she have to make in her pursuit of wealth, dignity and a life beyond poverty and humiliation?
With King at the centre of the story, "Inyosi "brings together family conflict, spiritual mystery and the struggle to protect a legacy while confronting the secrets that helped shape it.
"Inyosi" premieres on Mzansi Magic (DStv channel 161) on Monday, November 2, at 8.00pm.
