South Africans are facing a dramatic atmospheric split across the country on Thursday as opposing weather systems move in at the same time. While southern regions and coastal areas welcome cooler, wet conditions today, northern inland provinces are bracing for soaring temperatures. The contrasting patterns highlight a sharp seasonal shift bringing both sudden relief and intense heat warnings across different provinces.
Cold front brings coastal relief on Thursday
An onshore flow driven by a passing cold front is bringing a noticeable drop in temperatures along the southern coastline and into parts of KwaZulu-Natal on Thursday. These cooler conditions are delivering wet weather and much-needed coastal relief following recent warm spells.
According to weather updates reported by African Farming, intense Berg winds are pushing mercury levels to extreme highs on Thursday in the Lowveld and along the escarpment, where temperatures are expected to reach 40°C. Authorities have issued extremely high fire danger warnings for Limpopo, the Free State, Northern Cape, and North West, alongside heatwave advisories for Limpopo's Western Bushveld.

Heat advisories and safety measures
Standard weather advisories from the South African Weather Service warn that persistent heatwave conditions and high temperatures lead to severe thermal discomfort and dehydration. Residents are advised to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, to avoid direct sun exposure during peak afternoon hours, to seek cooler, well-ventilated spaces, and to remain vigilant against extremely high fire risks.
