A 10.22 kg rock that sat on a Michigan farm for decades was confirmed in 2018 to be a Group IIIAB iron meteorite made of about 88.5% iron and 11.5% nickel. Central Michigan University geologist Mona Sirbescu authenticated the find and the Smithsonian later verified it, putting its value around $100,000 and naming it “Edmore.”
Key Takeaways
- A 10.22 kg Michigan farm rock was confirmed in 2018 as a Group IIIAB iron meteorite worth about $100,000.
- Geologist Mona Sirbescu measured 88.5% iron and 11.5% nickel, then the Smithsonian confirmed the origin.
- Named Edmore, it ranks as Michigan’s 6th-largest meteorite, drawing collector interest for its patterns.
For decades on a Michigan farm near Edmore, a heavy lump of metal did the unglamorous job of holding a door open. The object dated back to a find in the 1930s, passed along with the property in 1988, and even made the rounds as a curiosity at local schools. It took the meteor explosion over Michigan in January 2018 to nudge its owner toward a closer look. Lab work at Central Michigan University, later backed by the Smithsonian, confirmed it was a IIIAB iron meteorite rich in iron and nickel, and worth about $100,000.
A space rock hiding in plain sight
Every so often, American science gets a reminder that discovery does not always arrive in a lab. Sometimes it sits by a barn door, quietly doing a job nobody thinks twice about. That was the case on a farm near Edmore, Michigan, where a plain-looking rock spent decades as a doorstop before anyone confirmed it was a meteorite, later pegged at roughly $100,000.
From farmland to scientific curiosity
The story starts in the 1930s, with family lore that a large object slammed into the property and left a crater behind. The farmer and his father reportedly dug it up the next morning, and the rock was said to be warm. No one filed a scientific report, and later retellings sometimes place the impact in 1939, but the key detail stayed constant: this thing was unusually heavy.
By 1988, the farm changed hands. The new owner was told the odd “stone” had fallen from the sky and, per that handshake history, it was included with the sale. It followed the family through moves and daily life, and for years it remained what it had always been: a conversation starter that also kept a door from swinging shut.
A chance reassessment inspired by Michigan’s skies
Then a separate event snapped the owner back to the possibility that folklore might be fact. After a meteor exploded over Michigan in January 2018, sparking wide public interest, the owner decided to finally get the doorstop checked. The rock ended up at Central Michigan University, where geologist Mona Sirbescu put it through real tests.
Sirbescu found the object was made of about 88.5% iron and 11.5% nickel, a chemical signature that immediately pushed it into “not-from-Earth” territory. A sample was sent to the Smithsonian Institution, which confirmed the extraterrestrial origin and helped cement its identity as an iron meteorite in the IIIAB group.
From doorstop to six-figure treasure
The meteorite weighs about 22.5 pounds, and measures roughly 6.7 × 7.9 × 9.1 inches. Officially named “Edmore, Michigan”, it ranks as the 6th-largest meteorite recorded in the state. Its preserved Widmanstätten patterns, those crystalline structures revealed in certain iron meteorites, add scientific value along with collector interest.
It is hard not to smile at the trajectory: a chunk of an ancient asteroid’s core, ignored for generations, ends up validated by institutional science and assigned a price tag most homeowners would notice. How many other “ordinary” objects in American garages would look different under a lab light?
