Rising energy costs, climate-related disruptions and growing demand for industrial metals are creating a mixed outlook for South Africa's economy.
In an analysis of global commodity markets, Coface economist Simon Lacoume warns that geopolitical tensions, tightening energy supplies and changing weather patterns are adding pressure to businesses, while stronger demand for metals linked to the energy transition could create opportunities for parts of the mining sector.
“Global commodity markets have entered a period of renewed volatility,” Lacoume said, pointing to a broad-based rise in prices across energy, agricultural commodities and industrial metals.
For South Africa, these shifts carry direct consequences for inflation, export earnings, business costs and economic growth prospects.
Energy and food costs add to inflation pressure
Despite Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana's fuel price relief announcement at Wednesday's Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement, South Africa's heavy reliance on imported crude oil and refined fuels leaves the country exposed to rising international energy prices.
Lacoume said escalating tensions in the Middle East and concerns about supply disruptions had contributed to higher oil prices, while tighter global energy markets continued to support elevated fuel costs.
Sustained increases in energy prices typically feed through into higher transport and logistics costs, adding to inflationary pressure across the economy. Higher fuel bills can also squeeze household spending power, while businesses already dealing with operational challenges face further pressure on their costs.
Lacoume said commodity prices influenced everything from inflation and food costs to export earnings, business operating expenses and growth prospects.
Agricultural markets are facing similar uncertainty. Lower global harvests and weather-related concerns have driven up prices for wheat, maize and sugar as supply conditions tighten.
The outlook is particularly relevant for South Africa and the wider Southern African region, where forecasts point to an increasing likelihood of El Niño-related weather disruptions during the coming agricultural season.
“Reduced rainfall and higher temperatures could affect crop production, livestock farming and water availability,” the analysis warns.
If agricultural output weakens across several key producing regions simultaneously, the effects could extend beyond farming communities. Higher food prices would affect consumers directly and could add to inflationary pressures.
Food inflation is particularly significant in emerging economies such as South Africa, where food accounts for a meaningful share of household budgets. Sustained increases in staple food prices could reduce disposable income and weigh on consumer spending.
Good news for mining sector
Not all the developments are negative. Stronger industrial metal prices, particularly copper, which has recently reached record levels, could provide support for South Africa's mining sector.
According to Lacoume, demand linked to electrification, renewable energy infrastructure, data centres and wider energy-transition projects is underpinning prices for several industrial metals.
As one of the world's leading producers of several strategic minerals, South Africa is well positioned to benefit from increasing global demand for metals required in the transition towards lower-carbon energy systems.
The mining sector remains a critical source of export earnings, employment and investment. Stronger commodity prices could therefore support activity in parts of the industry, although the benefits will depend on the minerals produced and prevailing market conditions.
Businesses face more complex risks
Lacoume said the current commodity rally highlighted how closely interconnected economic risks had become.
Geopolitical tensions are influencing energy markets, climate-related disruptions are affecting agricultural production, and longer-term trends such as electrification and digital infrastructure development are supporting industrial metal demand. Together, these forces are reshaping commodity markets and influencing economic conditions well beyond the countries where the disruptions originate.
For South African businesses, commodity price movements will continue to influence inflation, supply chains, operating costs and investment decisions across agriculture, mining, manufacturing and transport.
“While higher prices may create opportunities for exporters and commodity producers, they also introduce additional uncertainty into an already challenging operating environment,” Lacoume said.
He said businesses that actively monitor commodity market developments and climate-related risks would be better positioned to navigate the changing economic landscape.
Lacoume is an economist at Coface and previously served as a sector analyst at the French Embassy in South Africa, where he was responsible for the mining and industrial sectors.
