Leeds United have received encouraging advice about a young striker who could emerge as an interesting target in January, although Daniel Farke must solve a more immediate problem at Elland Road.
The Whites allowed Joel Piroe to join West Ham on loan during the summer transfer window without bringing in a replacement. Consequently, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Lukas Nmecha remain Farke’s two senior centre-forward options.
That decision has left Leeds short of cover in a crucial position, particularly if injuries disrupt their attacking plans during the demanding winter schedule.
According to TEAMtalk, Leeds scouts watched Waterford striker Tommy Lonergan score twice during Ireland Under-21s’ 3-1 victory over England during the international break. The 22-year-old has attracted interest from several English clubs, making him an interesting option for the Yorkshire side.
Why has Lonergan attracted attention?
Lonergan’s performances have caught the eye after an impressive campaign in the League of Ireland Premier Division, where he has registered 14 goals and five assists in 30 appearances.
Irish football expert Ronan Calvert believes the forward could represent a smart signing for Leeds, praising his physical development, aerial ability and finishing.
“Tommy Lonergan would be a very smart signing for Leeds”, Calvert told TEAMtalk.
He believes Lonergan’s strength and determination could help him adapt to English football, where defenders would test his physical attributes against stronger opposition.
Born in Dunboyne, Lonergan developed through St Patrick’s Athletic, UCD and Fleetwood Town before establishing himself at Waterford. His contract runs until November 2027, while Sunderland, Everton, Brentford and Brighton have reportedly monitored his progress.
However, his impressive Irish-league numbers don’t guarantee an immediate impact in the Premier League.
Should Leeds United sign Lonergan or prioritise an experienced backup?

Farke should pursue Lonergan as a long-term investment, but Leeds cannot afford to treat him as their answer to the striker shortage.
Calvert-Lewin needs reliable competition, while Nmecha must have adequate cover if either forward misses several matches. Expecting a 22-year-old stepping up from Irish football to shoulder that responsibility would carry considerable risk.
Lonergan’s physicality and aerial threat could suit Farke’s side, particularly when Leeds need a different attacking option. His finishing gives the club another reason to explore a deal, provided Waterford demand a reasonable fee.
However, Waterford’s contract position and their domestic cup and play-off ambitions could complicate negotiations. Leeds should avoid paying an inflated price simply because several rivals have shown interest.
The sensible approach is to sign Lonergan if the financial terms work, then provide development minutes through the Under-21s or a suitable loan arrangement. Alongside him, Leeds should recruit an experienced striker who can contribute immediately.
That would give Farke greater security without sacrificing the opportunity to develop a promising young forward. Leeds need both options, and solving only one half of that problem would leave their squad exposed again.
