- —Flashpoint In September 2026 Nassau told the US Justice Department that undercover US drug agents had worked in the islands without permission. The US ambassador called the claim fake news.
- —Still open The hospital loan, the drug-agent row, the tariff and the hiring of Cuban medical staff all remain unsettled in October 2026.
Bahamas geopolitics rests on one fact: the nearest island lies about 50 miles from Florida, so Washington shapes almost everything. For Americans the stakes in October 2026 are a new tariff, a dispute over undercover drug agents and a Chinese-financed hospital.
How Bahamas Geopolitics Works
Bahamas geopolitics starts with the map. The nearest island lies only about 50 miles from Florida, which explains most of the foreign policy.
Prime Minister Philip Davis leads the government. His Progressive Liberal Party won 33 of 41 seats on 12 May 2026, CARICOM election observers reported.
CARICOM is the Caribbean Community, the region’s trade and political bloc. The Bahamas belongs to it but stays outside its single market and customs union, the State Department says.
Fred Mitchell, the foreign minister, carries that line abroad. In September 2026 he represented the country at a Ukraine conference in Toronto and at the UN General Assembly.
The country depends on Washington for daily needs. The State Department’s 2026 investment report says the islands buy 80% to 90% of their food and fuel from the United States.
Michael Pintard, the Opposition Leader, called the September 2026 drug-agent row a “dangerous moment”. His Free National Movement is the main opposition party.
The United States, the Dominant Partner
In Bahamas geopolitics no other power comes close. The United States supplies most of the islands’ food, fuel, visitors and security help.
Trade, Tourists and the New Tariff
The US Census Bureau counts US$5.98 billion of American goods sold to the Bahamas in 2025, against US$2.62 billion bought from it. In the first eight months of 2026 the figures were US$3.78 billion and US$1.24 billion.
The State Department’s 2026 investment report says the Bahamas buys 80% to 90% of its food and fuel from the United States. About 85% of its visitors also come from there.
A new US tariff has tested that tie. Since 24 July 2026, Bahamian goods have faced a 12.5% US tariff under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974.
The US Trade Representative, Washington’s trade negotiator, said the Bahamas and 59 other economies did too little against forced-labour goods. The Bahamas had amended its Customs Management Act to ban such imports but still landed in the 12.5% group.
The government said it would seek an exemption for crawfish and stone crab. The Bahamas Commercial Fishers Alliance puts crawfish sales to the US at US$50 million to US$70 million a year.
Drug Agents, Police and the Coast Guard
Security cooperation runs through Operation Bahamas, Turks and Caicos, known as OPBAT, which began in 1982. The US Coast Guard works with Bahamian forces under it, the State Department says.
The US Navy operates an underwater research facility on Andros Island, the State Department says. US Customs and Border Protection runs preclearance at Nassau airport, so travellers clear US immigration before they fly.
A dispute opened in September 2026. A Bahamian delegation met US Justice Department officials on 18 September.
Wendall Jones, the Bahamian ambassador in Washington, said US officials had conceded that DEA agents lacked permission to operate in the islands. Walker’s reply appeared to contradict that, and the DEA is the US Drug Enforcement Administration.
The complaint followed court filings in New York against the accused trafficker Jonathan “Player” Gardiner. They describe a three-year undercover investigation.
US Ambassador Herschel Walker called the claim “fake news”. He said the United States “cannot accept the flow of drugs to our shores any longer”.
Davis said on 29 September 2026 that he wants only a proper process for joint operations. He does not expect relations to suffer.
Attorney General Wayne Munroe argued that foreign officers must follow Bahamian law. He added that the government has asked Washington several times to name the politician described in the filings, without an answer.
Migrants, Doctors and Visas
In December 2024 the prime minister’s office rejected a Trump team proposal that the Bahamas take migrants deported from other countries. It said the country “simply does not have the resources” for such a request.
In June 2025 the government said it would end its contracts with Cuba’s state agency for health workers and hire them directly. US officials had warned that visas for Bahamian officials and their relatives could be revoked, the Tribune in Nassau reported.
The health minister said in March 2026 that contract talks with the United States were in their final stage. Mitchell warned in December 2025 that US entry rules for Bahamians were becoming “unforgiving” and proposed a visa-free travel treaty.
China, the Loan and the Hospital
The Bahamas has recognised the People’s Republic of China since 1997. Davis reaffirmed the one-China principle at the Chinese embassy’s reception on 28 September 2026, the embassy said.
The biggest test is a new hospital on New Providence, the island that holds Nassau. The Export-Import Bank of China is lending US$195 million, which covers most of the cost, with the Bahamian government paying the rest.
The Tribune reported the terms in April 2026 as 2% interest over 20 years with a five-year grace period. China Railway Construction Corporation is the main builder, and construction is planned to take 30 to 36 months.
In February 2026 the US Embassy quoted Ambassador Walker as saying “other financing options” that “adhere to international norms” would be better. It added that the US Treasury lists the builder as a restricted investment over alleged ties to China’s military-industrial complex.
The Chinese embassy said the project serves the Bahamas’ “best interests” and that the cooperation “involves no geopolitical calculations”. Ambassador Yan Jiarong said the Bahamas has the sovereign right to choose its partners.
In April 2026 the Bahamian foreign ministry sought “urgent clarification” from Washington and called Walker’s intervention unusual. It said all documents were tabled in Parliament and that US suppliers will provide the medical equipment on commercial terms.
Health officials argue that Princess Margaret Hospital in Nassau, built in the late 1950s, cannot meet current demand. The Public Hospitals Authority says the new hospital will complement existing facilities.
The Free National Movement opposes the project and says it would not proceed if it won power. Yan met the health ministry in August 2026 to discuss advancing construction, the embassy said.
Russia, Ukraine and Sanctions
No loan, base or trade pact between the Bahamas and Russia had been announced as of October 2026. Its stance shows up in votes and in finance.
On 2 March 2022 it voted yes on the UN General Assembly resolution on Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. The vote was 141 to 5, with 35 abstentions, the UN voting record shows.
In March 2022 the Bahamian financial regulators told licensed firms to avoid sanctioned persons and businesses linked to Russia and Belarus. The Financial Action Task Force, the global money-laundering watchdog, did not list the Bahamas as a risky jurisdiction in June 2026.
Mitchell spoke at a Toronto conference on 28 and 29 September 2026 about returning Ukrainian children and prisoners of war. He said: “We are a region which is far away from Ukraine, but we identify with the struggle.”
Europe, the Gulf, India and Turkey
In Bahamas geopolitics Europe matters through trade rules, money and projects. Through the regional group CARIFORUM, the Bahamas is party to trade agreements with the European Union (2008) and Britain (2019).
The EU Council adopted its latest list of tax non-cooperative jurisdictions on 9 October 2026, and the Bahamas is not on it. The EU is also paying for a yearlong study of an ocean thermal energy plant on Eleuthera, BNamericas reported in September 2026.
A Dutch shipyard, Damen, signed contracts on 22 July 2026 to refit four Royal Bahamas Defence Force vessels. Three will be refitted in the Netherlands and one in Colombia.
The Gulf is a growing partner. The Bahamas opened an embassy in Abu Dhabi in February 2025, and it also covers Saudi Arabia and Qatar.
Relations date from 2011 with the UAE, 2013 with Qatar and 2022 with Saudi Arabia. A visa-abolition agreement with the UAE has been signed, Mitchell said.
The Saudi Fund for Development helps finance the Airport Renaissance Project, worth about US$300 million, the State Department says. Government-guaranteed loans and private investors fund the rest.
India matters mainly through people. The government is recruiting doctors and nurses from India, the Philippines and Ghana, the Tribune reported in July 2025.
BRICS is the bloc that began with Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. The group’s official portal lists the Bahamas neither as a member nor as a partner country in October 2026.
No agreement between the Bahamas and Turkey had been announced as of October 2026. The same holds for the Indian government.
UN Votes and the Small-State Voice
The Bahamas often votes with the large majority at the United Nations. On 29 October 2025 it backed the General Assembly call to end the US embargo on Cuba, which passed 165 to 7.
Washington opposed the call. Davis told the Assembly on 25 September 2026 that Cuba should be freed of the embargo and the US terror-sponsor list.
He asked all states to respect the region as a “zone of peace”. He also said that “a sovereignty that must ask permission is not sovereignty”.
Davis urged the Security Council to renew the mandate of the Gang Suppression Force in Haiti, a UN-backed international police force. He also said the Bahamas endorses the UN declaration on sea-level rise, which holds that statehood will survive rising seas.
The Bahamas is also running for a non-permanent Security Council seat in 2032 and 2033, with the vote expected in 2031. It is not a member of the World Trade Organization, and the State Department says accession is unlikely before 2030.
Ports, Fuel and Sea Lanes
Minerals are not the prize here: refined petroleum was the largest Bahamian export at US$610 million, the Tribune reported in July 2026. Plastics (US$55.7 million) and pearl products (US$39 million) trailed far behind.
Ports matter more. Hutchison Ports FCP, which runs the Freeport Container Port on Grand Bahama, began a US$100 million upgrade in 2025, Seatrade Maritime reported.
The Hawksbill Creek Agreement of 1955 guarantees the Freeport special economic zone through 2054, the State Department says. A 25-year, US$250 million lease of the Nassau Cruise Port to the UK-based Global Ports Holding dates from 2019.
Fuel is the other lever. Shell holds 40% of New Providence Gas, which contracted a floating gas import terminal for the island, Eyewitness News reported in 2026.
What Each Power Wants
Each outside power plays Bahamas geopolitics for a different prize. The list below sums up what each one is after.
- United States: a deal on Chinese hospital financing that it says would better follow international norms, fewer drug flows, and an end to Cuban medical contracts.
- China: recognition of the one-China principle, visible projects and a friendly government, while it says it pursues no geopolitical aims.
- European Union and United Kingdom: trade under the 2008 and 2019 agreements, tax-transparency standards and climate and energy projects.
- Gulf states: diplomatic presence, visa and tax agreements, and a stake in projects such as the airport.
- Russia: no confirmed stake, while Western governments expect the Bahamas to enforce sanctions on Russian money.
What It Means for US Readers
Bahamas geopolitics touches Americans directly because the islands are a close neighbour. About 85% of its visitors come from the United States, and US customs officers clear travellers in Nassau.
Importers of Bahamian crawfish and plastics face the 12.5% tariff. Drug prosecutions in New York, including the Gardiner case, draw on evidence gathered in the islands.
A Chinese-financed hospital a short flight from Florida is a test for US influence in the Caribbean. More coverage sits on the Rio Times Bahamas page.

What Is Not Known
The politician named only as “Politician-1” in US court filings has not been identified. It is also unclear whether the DEA agents had permission, since Bahamian and US officials give opposing accounts.
Washington has not said whether it will exempt Bahamian crawfish from the 12.5% tariff. The final cost of the hospital, and whether the US will help finance an alternative, are also open.
No agreement between the Bahamas and Russia, Turkey, the Indian government or the BRICS group had been announced as of October 2026. How far Bahamas geopolitics will move toward Beijing or Washington after the hospital decision is also open.
