Roadside bloodshed in Surat Thani as a woman shoots dead her former rubber tapper, 47, over a rice cooker and borrowed motorcycle. She admits threatening him with a .357 handgun but claims he lunged with an axe. The police arrest her and investigate.
A row over a stolen rice cooker and borrowed motorcycle ended in bloodshed in Surat Thani on Wednesday. A female plantation owner shot dead her 47-year-old former rubber tapper after chasing him down and confronting him on a public road. She admitted pulling a .357-calibre handgun and threatening him before firing a single fatal shot. However, she claimed the man lunged at her with an axe, forcing her to act in self-defence. The victim later died in hospital. Meanwhile, the woman surrendered her gun and was arrested. Police are now probing her account of the killing, with no independent evidence yet confirming the claimed axe attack.

A female plantation owner shot dead her former employee in Surat Thani on Wednesday after confronting him over a rice cooker and motorcycle. The 47-year-old victim was killed with a .357-calibre handgun after allegedly refusing to return the woman’s property.
However, the suspect claimed she fired in self-defence when the former rubber tapper lunged at her with an axe. She subsequently surrendered to police at the roadside scene, handing over the firearm. Meanwhile, rescue workers rushed the critically injured man to hospital, where he died. Police are now investigating the woman’s account of the fatal confrontation.
The shooting occurred during the early hours of October 14 in Phrasaeng district, Surat Thani province. Police identified the victim as Mr Wira, 47, a native of neighbouring Nakhon Si Thammarat province. He had previously worked tapping rubber trees on the woman’s plantation.
Female plantation owner surrenders after roadside shooting sparked by dispute over two possessions
Meanwhile, the suspect was identified as Ms Nares, a resident of Phrasaeng district. She remained at the scene after the shooting and surrendered when officers arrived.
The confrontation took place on a public road in Moo 11, Bang Sawan subdistrict. At its centre was a dispute involving two items of property. According to Ms Nares, her former employee had stolen a rice cooker belonging to her.
In addition, he was still using a motorcycle she had previously lent him. She claimed that both items remained in his possession when their paths crossed on Wednesday morning.
Ms Nares told investigators she spotted Mr Wira riding the motorcycle past her house. She then followed him to demand the return of her belongings. However, the encounter turned deadly after the man reportedly refused to hand over either item.
The woman admitted producing her handgun to threaten him before firing a single shot. She insisted the gunfire followed an unexpected attack with an axe.
Police Lieutenant Anucha Preecha, deputy inspector at Bang Sawan Police Station, received the initial emergency report. The station’s radio centre alerted him to a firearm attack on a public road in Moo 11. In response, he informed his superiors and coordinated an urgent police operation. Rescue personnel were also dispatched to assist the injured man.
Police recover .357-calibre handgun as former rubber tapper dies after being rushed to a hospital
Officers arriving at the scene found Ms Nares waiting to surrender. Notably, she handed over the .357-calibre handgun used in the shooting. There was no report of any further confrontation with police.
At the same time, emergency workers attended to Mr Wira, who had suffered a serious gunshot wound. His condition was critical when rescue personnel transported him to hospital.
Despite receiving emergency medical attention, the former rubber tapper subsequently died from his injuries. Police then began examining the roadside shooting scene and collecting evidence. Separately, investigators questioned Ms Nares about the circumstances leading to the fatal gunshot. She admitted firing the weapon but maintained that she had acted to protect herself.
During preliminary questioning, the woman described her previous employment relationship with Mr Wira. He had worked as a rubber tapper on her plantation before leaving the job. Subsequently, a dispute arose over a rice cooker she accused him of stealing. The motorcycle was a separate issue because she had previously allowed him to use it. According to her statement, she wanted both items returned.
Employer says former worker refused to return motorcycle and rice cooker before she drew handgun
The woman explained that Wednesday’s confrontation began when she recognised her motorcycle passing her home. Mr Wira was riding it at the time. She followed him and confronted him on the public road. Once she caught up with him, she demanded the return of the motorcycle and rice cooker. However, she claimed the 47-year-old refused to comply.
The refusal prompted Ms Nares to produce her .357-calibre handgun, according to her police statement. She acknowledged using the firearm to threaten the former employee during their disagreement.
Crucially, she did not dispute drawing the weapon before the reported axe attack. Nevertheless, she insisted that she fired only after the situation became physically threatening.
Her account placed the decisive moment during an attempt to retrieve a set of keys. Ms Nares claimed she bent down to pick them up while confronting Mr Wira. Suddenly, according to her statement, the former rubber tapper approached her carrying an axe. She alleged that he lunged towards her with the weapon. In response, she fired one shot from her handgun.
Woman claims axe attack prompted fatal shot, but police have yet to confirm her account of events
The bullet struck Mr Wira, leaving him critically injured. Rescue workers subsequently transported him to hospital, but the gunshot wound proved fatal. Ms Nares maintained that she had fired because she believed the man was attacking her. Her explanation formed the basis of her self-defence claim during the initial police investigation.
However, the reported axe attack was based on the suspect’s own account. Police had not independently confirmed that version of events in the information initially released. Furthermore, there was no confirmation that an axe had been recovered from the shooting scene. Investigators had also not disclosed whether witnesses observed the confrontation immediately before the gunshot.
The precise sequence of events therefore remained a central issue for investigators. Ms Nares admitted to following the victim, demanding her property and threatening him with a firearm. She also acknowledged firing the fatal shot. By contrast, her claim that Mr Wira attacked her with an axe had not been independently established.
Police arrest plantation owner and examine handgun as investigation focuses on fatal roadside shooting
Police examined the roadside location and gathered evidence following the shooting. As part of their investigation, officers also took possession of the handgun surrendered by the woman. The weapon was identified as a .357-calibre firearm. However, the initial information did not include further technical findings concerning the gun or the recovered evidence.
Investigators subsequently arrested Ms Nares and informed her of the accusations against her. In accordance with police procedures, officers also explained her legal rights. They then prepared the formal arrest documentation before transferring her to Bang Sawan Police Station. Further questioning and legal proceedings were to follow.
The initial report did not specify the precise criminal charges recorded against the suspect. Likewise, police had not announced whether they accepted her explanation that she acted in self-defence. The investigation remained focused on establishing what happened during the roadside confrontation and immediately before the fatal shot.
The dispute itself involved two separate claims concerning the victim’s possession of the woman’s property. First, Ms Nares accused him of stealing her rice cooker. Secondly, she said he had retained a motorcycle she previously lent him. Both items were central to her explanation of why she followed and confronted the former employee.
Questions remain over missing property and alleged axe attack as police assess the woman’s account
Nevertheless, the available information did not establish whether either item had been recovered after the shooting. Nor was there confirmation of any earlier police complaint concerning the rice cooker or motorcycle. The theft accusation therefore remained part of the woman’s statement rather than an independently established finding.
Another key element was the moment Ms Nares produced her handgun. By her own admission, she drew the weapon after Mr Wira refused her demands. She then claimed the former employee approached her with an axe while she retrieved the keys. The fatal shot followed, according to her account.
Police must now establish whether the evidence supports that sequence. In particular, the alleged axe attack remains central to the woman’s explanation of the shooting. The initial findings did not establish whether Mr Wira possessed such a weapon during the confrontation.
Former rubber tapper dies in hospital as police continue inquiries into disputed roadside shooting
Meanwhile, the circumstances of the victim’s death were confirmed by the emergency response. Rescue workers found him seriously wounded and transported him to hospital. Despite that intervention, the 47-year-old died from his injuries. The former rubber tapper was originally from Nakhon Si Thammarat but had previously worked on the suspect’s Surat Thani plantation.
