A new mock trade has the baseball world buzzing, but it falls short of reality. FanSided proposed a deal sending Ronald Acuña Jr. to the Boston Red Sox for Jarren Duran, Wilyer Abreu, and prospect John Holobetz. This idea has split opinions in both cities, but the math just does not work for Atlanta. The Braves would be foolish to trade their best player for a package that lacks star power.
The contract is the main reason this deal makes no sense for Boston. He hit 20 home runs and stole bases at a high rate in 107 games this year, proving he can still dominate despite injury scares. His career slash line sits at .285/.379/.516 over nine seasons. Trading a player with this much production for a bargain contract is a mistake no smart team should make.
The Return Package Lacks Star Power
Look at what Boston would give up in return. Jarren Duran is a prime change of scenery candidate, but he has faced too much drama in Boston. Wilyer Abreu is a good defender and might win a third Gold Glove, yet he is not an everyday MVP. The prospect John Holobetz is Boston’s third-highest ranked pitcher with a 4.07 ERA over 119.1 innings. He has 132 strikeouts but also 36 walks. These players are solid, but they are not worth the face of the franchise.
The Red Sox should give more in exchange for Acuña, according to reports. Reports note that fans specifically want more than this group of players. MLB insider Jon Heyman believes a trade for Acuña is a “major longshot” this offseason anyway. The Red Sox need power, but they cannot get it by overpaying for a player who is already under control for cheap. The market for power is thin, but this specific return is too weak.
Why Atlanta Should Not Blink
The Braves have a clear window to win right now. Acuña is the engine of that window. Trading him away would leave a massive hole in the lineup that no amount of prospect depth can fill. The team needs a shortstop fix, and House That Hank Built suggests looking at Franklin Arias, but that is a different conversation entirely.
Some fans argue the Red Sox might offer a better deal if they include top prospect Franklin Arias. The Athletic’s Jen McCaffrey reported that Boston considered trading Arias last year but opted not to. Even if Arias was available, the Braves would need to give up too much to get him. The Chris Sale trade ended lopsided against Atlanta, so Boston might not want to “lose” another trade. This history makes a massive return less likely, not more. The Acuña trade is dead on arrival.
The numbers show Acuña is worth every penny of his cheap deal. He played 107 games this year, his most since 2023, and hit 18 doubles and a triple.
