The distribution of Family Cards and Farmers' Cards introduced by the government will reduce Bangladesh's poverty rate by a further 5% this year, BNP acting secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has said.
He made the remarks at a rally following a dengue awareness leaflet distribution programme in Shantinagar today (22 October).
Rizvi also accused the banned Awami League and a "secretive party" of conspiring against the BNP and spreading propaganda.
"The Awami League was a party that spread propaganda. Now another secretive party has joined it. There is evidence of a relationship between them," he said, adding that the two groups had similar behaviour and made similar statements.
Referring to past allegations against the BNP, Rizvi said the party had been portrayed as a militant political force and accused of failing to ensure the safety of people of other religions if it came to power.
He said BNP leaders and activists had worked day and night to ensure security at Durga Puja venues across the country. He described this year's Durga Puja as the most peaceful and festive in 17–18 years, adding that visitors from neighbouring countries had praised the arrangements.
On dengue prevention, Rizvi said the government and the BNP had taken coordinated initiatives to raise public awareness. Leaflets prepared with advice from renowned physicians were being distributed to inform people about dengue prevention and the steps to take if infected.
