Hughes is playing this season in the final year of his six-year, $47.1 million contract, and a potential contract extension has been looming since Minnesota’s blockbuster trade to acquire him last season.
“I’m where I’ve always been. I’m excited right now. My two feet are planted in Minnesota and you know, something could happen soon,” Hughes said when asked about the situation. “I’m not really to sure. I’m really enjoying playing here. I love playing with, you see Brodes, Spurge, and when Brock comes back, there’s a lot of things that are set up nicely here for me to have success individually and as a team. We have a great team. First thing, is you want to get into the playoffs but I would think that we have a chance to win this year.”
Hughes has 13 points (two goals and 11 assists) through 13 games, and he’s still performing like one of the best defensemen in the world. Signing him to an extension would be a no-brainer decision for the Wild.
Between ongoing Dylan Larkin trade rumors and Hughes’ extension, there are a lot of dominoes to fall regarding Minnesota’s roster future. Whether the two situations are connected remains to be seen.
