The programme, which forms part of a broader national government initiative, targets three distinct areas of need within the county: affordable housing, modern market facilities and hostel accommodation for students in technical and medical training.
What the KSh 15 Billion Will Build in Elgeyo-Marakwet
A total of 3,000 housing units are planned for construction under the residential component, adding significantly to the county's existing stock of homes. Nine modern markets will also be developed to give small-scale traders dedicated and organised trading spaces, replacing informal arrangements that have long characterised commerce in many parts of the county.

The student accommodation element targets hostels with capacity for 2,500 learners drawn from technical colleges and Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) institutions, addressing a persistent shortage of affordable housing options for students pursuing technical and medical training.
Part of a Wider National Programme
The Elgeyo-Marakwet investment sits within a national programme whose targets are considerably larger in scale. Across the country, the government is working towards 300,000 housing units, 600 modern markets and student hostels capable of accommodating 180,000 learners in universities, technical colleges and KMTC institutions. The national programme is also projected to generate employment for 1.1 million young people.
For Elgeyo-Marakwet, the combined effect of the planned investment will be felt differently across population groups. Families on the housing waiting list, local traders seeking structured market spaces and students struggling to secure affordable accommodation near their colleges each stand to benefit from a different strand of the programme.
The extent to which those benefits are realised will ultimately depend on how quickly construction begins and how effectively the completed facilities are allocated and managed once they are operational.
Ruto's Affordable Housing Plan in Lamu
In other news, TUKO also highlighted facts about President William Ruto’s KSh7.5 billion plan to build 3,000 affordable homes in Lamu ahead of the proposed Dangote refinery, alongside the handover of 20,189 title deeds to residents.
But the project faces a legal challenge from residents disputing the use of land they say their families have occupied for generations, as concerns over compensation and environmental protection remain unresolved.
