Houston Texans legend J.J. Watt is taking another major step in his post-playing career, landing a long-term deal with CBS Sports to become the network's full-time lead NFL game analyst and replace Tony Romo in the booth.
Watt has quickly established himself as a natural fit in the broadcasting world since retiring from the NFL following the 2022 season. His combination of football knowledge, personality and ability to break down the game has helped him transition from one of the league's most dominant defensive players to a rising voice in sports media.
Now, CBS is making a significant commitment to the former Texans star, giving him the opportunity to become the face of its NFL game coverage alongside its lead broadcast crew. Replacing Romo, who became one of the most recognizable analysts in football after joining CBS in 2017, is no small task, but Watt has the experience and credibility to make the role his own.
Watt expressed his excitement about the opportunity and the people he will work alongside at CBS, "I am incredibly honored and grateful to have the opportunity to represent CBS Sports and all of the fantastic people who make this place so special. From the brotherhood of THE NFL TODAY to my crews calling games, I couldn't ask for better teammates alongside me on this television journey."
For Texans fans, Watt's latest career development is another reminder of the impact he continues to make well beyond his playing days in Houston. The three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year spent 10 seasons with the franchise after being selected with the 11th overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft.
During that stretch, Watt became one of the most accomplished defensive players in league history, earning five first-team All-Pro selections and helping establish the Texans as a consistent contender in the AFC. His relentless playing style and leadership made him one of the most beloved athletes in franchise history.
Although Watt's time in Houston ended when he was released in 2021, his connection to the organization and its fan base remains strong. He later spent one season with the Arizona Cardinals before retiring.
His broadcasting career now gives him another platform to share his understanding of the game with NFL fans across the country. Watt's experience playing at the highest level, combined with his ability to communicate what happens between the lines, gives CBS reason to believe he can thrive in his new position.
Replacing an established name like Romo comes with expectations, but Watt has earned the opportunity to prove himself. For one of the greatest players in Texans history, this long-term commitment marks another impressive milestone in an already remarkable football career.
