With Ekurhuleni’s service-delivery needs and political instability looming over the local government election campaign, ANC mayoral candidate Doctor Xhakaza says his party has the experience and a plan to improve services for residents.
Xhakaza made the pledge during the IOL 2026 Town Hall debate at the Joburg Theatre on Monday, outlining the ANC’s priorities ahead of the November 4 elections.
He said the party wanted to build a sustainable city, strengthen the local economy and improve service delivery.
“We can ensure that there's sustainability. We can make sure that we are a city in Gauteng that will be an economic powerhouse, that issues offer economic development… but we ensure that there's improved and impactful service delivery,” he said.
Xhakaza said the ANC’s manifesto prioritised reliable basic services, infrastructure investment, electricity supply, clean water, safer streets and sustainable municipal finances.
He also highlighted the need for an efficient, accountable administration and greater public participation, saying councillors should maintain regular contact with communities.
“Our councillors must talk to our people and talk to our people all the time,” he said.
The promises come as Ekurhuleni is governed by an ANC-led minority coalition facing political friction and instability.
For residents, the key test will be whether campaign pledges translate into dependable services, functioning infrastructure and tangible improvements in their daily lives.
The debate continues.
