Apple’s first foldable iPhone could face supply constraints and delivery delays as manufacturing challenges threaten its initial market rollout. iPhone Duo faced production difficulties with final assembly, foldable OLED displays, and hinge components.
Foldable iPhone Production Faces Low Yields
Manufacturing efficiency remains a key concern as Apple prepares for the sale of its first foldable smartphone. According to reports citing Chinese media outlet Jiemian News, “Final assembly yields stood slightly above 60% as of September 17. Apple’s manufacturing partners are adjusting equipment and assembly processes to improve output.”
Experts suggest that these changes could take time to deliver consistent results. The tech giant aims to increase production without compromising product reliability. Looking ahead, foldable OLED panels and hinge components also face production challenges, delayed deliveries, and design adjustments. The hinge is particularly important as it needs to withstand repeated folding, maintain structural strength, and provide a smooth opening mechanism.
Apple's emphasis on build quality could make it harder to accelerate production without increasing the risk of defective units. Component suppliers also need to maintain consistent quality as manufacturing volumes increase. These challenges leave manufacturers with limited time to refine production processes before the device reaches consumers.
Limited Inventory Could Affect Initial Sales
Production bottlenecks could restrict Apple's launch inventory and force some customers to wait longer for deliveries. Reports suggest that the company is targeting several million units for 2026. However, estimates vary, and the tech firm is yet to confirm its production plans.
The foldable iPhone is expected to start at USD 1,999 in the United States, placing it in the premium segment. It can also potentially limit its appeal among price-sensitive buyers. Experts suggest that extended delivery delays may frustrate prospective buyers and affect the launch experience.
