Ever since we first got word that Ryan Coogler was interested in rebooting The X-Files back in 2023, we've wanted to believe that the man responsible for Black Panther, Creed, and Sinners would actually get a shot at bringing back one of the greatest TV shows ever made. And now, following a pilot order from Hulu back in February, the truth is officially out there: Coogler's The X-Files — starring Danielle Deadwyler (Till) and Himesh Patel (The Odyssey) as two chalk-and-cheese FBI agents investigating unexplained phenomena — has been ordered to series, with a UK Disney+ release confirmed. Check out the reveal below;
Mysteriously referred to as "The X-Files project" in its official announcement, Coogler's reboot of Chris Carter's OG X-Files has already filmed its pilot episode, with Coogler himself serving as writer, director, and executive producer, and a whole host of guest stars joining Patel and Deadwyler — including freshly minted Weapons Oscar winner Amy Madigan, Steve Buscemi, and Ben Foster. As for the main show itself, Coogler will remain aboard as executive producer, with See's Jennifer Yale attached as showrunner.
“I’ve loved The X-Files for a long time, so getting the chance to write and direct the pilot has meant a great deal to me,” said Coogler in a statement accompanying today's news. “What Chris Carter created is special, and we wanted to honour everything that made the original series connect with so many people while also finding our own way into that world. Danielle and Himesh, along with the rest of our cast, have brought such original perspectives and performances to these characters, and watching that come together has been one of the most rewarding parts of the experience. I couldn’t have asked for better collaborators than my crew, colleagues at Proximity Media and our partners at Onyx Collective and 20th Television. I’m grateful for the trust and support they’ve given us as we take on this new chapter.”
While plot specifics on Coogler's X-Files remain scarce at this point, we do have a brief yet tantalising synopsis for the show that promises we're in for a proper return to OG X-Files territory. It reads: "Two highly decorated but vastly different FBI agents form an unlikely bond when they are assigned to a long-shuttered division devoted to cases involving unexplained phenomena.” With Ryan Coogler at the helm, Deadwyler and Patel front and centre, and a full season already in the works, we couldn't be more ready for the FBI's most unwanted to return... watch this space!
