The Pittsburgh Steelers travel to Tampa Bay to face the Buccaneers on Sunday, October 18, with both teams coming off victories. Pittsburgh improved to 3-2 by beating Indianapolis 34-22, while Tampa Bay earned its first win, defeating Dallas 24-16. Kickoff at Raymond James Stadium is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET on CBS.
The matchup puts Aaron Rodgers against a Buccaneers defense that excels against the run but generates limited pressure. Tampa Bay, meanwhile, is preparing for rookie Jalon Daniels to make another start with Baker Mayfield still recovering from a thumb injury. That quarterback contrast helps explain Pittsburgh’s road-favorite status.

Steelers vs. Buccaneers Key Injuries
Mayfield remained out of practice Thursday with his right-thumb injury. Tampa Bay’s official preview expects Daniels to make his third consecutive start, although final game designations were not included in that report. Daniels threw for 189 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions in Dallas.
Safety Antoine Winfield Jr. also missed Thursday’s practice with a rib injury. His potential absence would weaken Tampa Bay’s coverage and tackling against a Pittsburgh offense that uses Jaylen Warren as both a runner and receiver. Left tackle Tristan Wirfs offered better news, returning to full participation after missing Wednesday with a knee issue.
Pittsburgh’s defensive availability deserves attention. Jalen Ramsey, Jamel Dean and Keeanu Benton were limited Thursday, while Rico Dowdle progressed to full participation. Michael Pittman Jr. remains on injured reserve, reducing Rodgers’ receiving options. Practice participation should not be confused with a confirmed Sunday designation.
Steelers Betting Trends
Pittsburgh is 3-2 against the spread this season, with three of its five games finishing over the total. However, the Steelers have lost both road appearances, falling at New England and Cleveland. That makes this a more demanding spot than their overall record suggests.
Warren provides the strongest offensive argument for backing Pittsburgh. He leads the team with 410 rushing yards and 230 receiving yards, including an 80-yard touchdown reception and a 50-yard touchdown run against Indianapolis. His versatility gives Rodgers alternatives if conventional rushing attempts stall.
That flexibility matters because Tampa Bay allows just 72.8 rushing yards per game, second-best in the league. Pittsburgh may need screens, checkdowns and favorable receiving matchups rather than expecting Warren to consistently overpower the defensive front.
Buccaneers Betting Trends
Tampa Bay is 1-4 against the spread this season and has failed to cover nine of its last 10 games. Last week’s victory provides encouragement, but it does not erase the broader inconsistency that makes the Buccaneers difficult to trust.
Their defensive strengths could still keep this close. Tampa Bay allows 299.4 total yards per game and holds opponents to a 33.9% third-down conversion rate. Pittsburgh converts only 32.8% of its third downs, creating a potential path for the home underdog to force punts.
The concern is pressure. Tampa Bay ranks 28th in sacks per pass attempt, while its offense ranks 30th in sacks allowed per pass attempt. That imbalance favors Rodgers’ experience over Daniels’ ability to operate against T.J. Watt and Alex Highsmith.
Keys to the Matchup
Pittsburgh must stay patient against Tampa Bay’s run defense. Using Warren in space can create manageable third downs without repeatedly challenging the Buccaneers’ strongest unit.
Tampa Bay needs Bucky Irving to reduce Daniels’ workload. Irving has 406 rushing yards, giving the offense a foundation for avoiding predictable passing situations.
Red-zone execution could decide a low-total matchup. Neither offense can afford promising possessions that repeatedly produce only field goals.
Steelers vs. Buccaneers Prediction and Pick
Tampa Bay’s run defense should prevent a comfortable Pittsburgh win, but Rodgers offers the steadier quarterback option. The Steelers’ edge pressure should eventually force Daniels into difficult situations.
