Works Minister Alexander Nanta Linggi says AI will be integrated into the Multi-Lane Fast Flow (MLFF) toll system once it is fully implemented nationwide.
KUALA LUMPUR: Artificial intelligence (AI) technology will be integrated into the Multi-Lane Fast Flow (MLFF) toll collection system when it is fully operational, said Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi.
He said AI technology was already being used in road management, planning and maintenance involving both federal and state roads.
Nanta said the adoption of such technology in the road sector was in line with the country’s efforts to advance smart infrastructure development.
“We need to work with industry players worldwide because this technology is highly dynamic. We are already applying AI in road management, planning and maintenance.
“Once fully implemented, the MLFF system will incorporate AI technology,” he said at a press conference after officiating the 13th Malaysian Road Conference and the 6th Asia Pacific Road Congress here today.
The conference, themed “Transforming the Nation through Future-Ready Roads”, focuses on developing quality, resilient and sustainable road infrastructure, while providing a platform for local and international industry players and engineering professionals to exchange knowledge and share technological advancements, said Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi.
He said the conference was important in helping Malaysia keep pace with advances in road engineering technology, particularly the growing application of artificial intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT) in the digital era.
The biennial event had attracted more than 1,000 participants and featured 121 technical papers covering 10 sub-fields, alongside 112 exhibition booths showcasing road engineering technologies and solutions, he said.
“This gives us a valuable opportunity to gain firsthand insight into the latest technologies, solutions and innovations in road engineering,” he said.
Nanta added that the conference also offered local engineers opportunities to broaden their knowledge and exchange experiences with international professionals through initiatives such as the Young Engineers and Professionals programme and the Malaysian Road Conference Invention & Innovation Exhibition 2026.
He said that Malaysia should make full use of such international platforms to strengthen cooperation and facilitate the exchange of expertise among road engineering professionals.
