President Denis Sassou Nguesso unveiled the policy on May 25, 2026, at Africa Day celebrations held in Brazzaville, which ran alongside the African Development Bank's annual meetings.
Under the new arrangement, citizens from across the continent will be able to enter Congo-Brazzaville without applying for a visa in advance.
Nguesso's Call for Continental Unity
Framing the announcement as a contribution to deeper regional integration, Nguesso challenged other African governments to move past what he called "selfishness and nationalism" and push harder for the full implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
The decision was presented as a concrete demonstration of the kind of open-border thinking the trade framework is meant to encourage.
Details on maximum permitted stay, documentation requirements, and other entry conditions have not yet been published, and the government is expected to clarify these ahead of the January 2027 implementation date.
Congo Joins Growing Visa-Free Movement Across Africa
The announcement places Congo-Brazzaville within a broader regional shift in which several African governments have moved to dismantle visa barriers for other Africans.
Rwanda led the way by introducing visa-free access for African nationals in 2023.
Ghana followed with its own policy in January 2025, while Kenya's equivalent measure came into force in July 2025.
Togo announced a comparable policy in May 2026, the same month Congo-Brazzaville declared its own.
The African Union has long championed seamless movement of people across member states as a foundational element of continental development, and each new addition is viewed as progress toward that goal.
Which African countries offer visa-free access to Africans?
Like Congo-Brazzaville, Chad is also among African countries that offer visa-free access to fellow Africans. Chad will scrap visa requirements on January 1, 2027.
By the end of 2025, just 28.2% of travel between African countries was visa-free, according to the African Development Bank’s Visa Openness Index.
The planned changes add to a growing push to make freer movement across the continent a reality.
