The Acting Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Prof. Emmanuel Osei Sarpong, has revealed the Accra Sports Stadium is facing engineering problems at the moment, but demolishing it is not the way to go.
According to him, the persistent challenges linked to the facility are being checked and addressed to ensure it gets into the best shape once again.
There have been several concerns raised about the current start of the Accra Sports Stadium after former NSA Board Chairman Prof. Fred Awaah described it as a ‘death trap’. He also suggested that the stadium would have been demolished if the authority had its way.
However, Prof. Osei Sarpong believes taking down the current edifice for a complete rebuild in the time being will not be of good help.
“For me, Accra Sports Stadium is a very good place. We have an engineering problem, and so that is one of the things we are looking at, but we cannot fix everything at a go. We will explore the options to determine whether renovation or building a new stadium would be the best solution,” he said.
“In the interim, we cannot break Accra Sports Stadium down. So we need to look at the gaps one after the other and solve them gradually until we are sure the majority of the gaps are.”
The Accra Sports Stadium hosted Ghana’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Gambia last month and is expected to host the doubleheader against Somalia next month.
