Jowai, Oct 22: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Jaintia Hills, in coordination with the State Department of Agriculture, the Agricultural Technology Management Agency (ATMA) and allied departments on Thursday has launched Khet Bachao Abhiyan, a month-long campaign to promote sustainable and climate-resilient farming across West and East Jaintia Hills.
Running from October 22 to November 30, 2026, the campaign aims to strengthen farmers’ knowledge of environmentally friendly agricultural practices, improve soil health, conserve natural resources and enhance crop productivity.
The initiative also seeks to protect farm livelihoods against changing weather patterns and promote efficient use of land and water resources.
As part of the campaign, KVK Jaintia Hills and its partner agencies will organise village-level awareness programmes, capacity-building workshops and practical field demonstrations.
The key focus areas include natural and organic farming, soil health and nutrient management, quality seed production,
Community seed banks, and soil and water conservation. The campaign will also promote climate-resilient agriculture, integrated farming systems, integrated pest and disease management, waste recycling and vermicomposting.
These practices are intended to reduce dependence on chemical inputs, improve soil fertility, protect crops from pests and diseases, and help farmers manage agricultural risks associated with changing climatic conditions.
The campaign will also focus on conserving local seed varieties and strengthening community seed banks to ensure access to quality seeds for future planting seasons. Vermicomposting and agricultural waste recycling will be encouraged to turn farm waste into organic soil nutrients.
To expand its reach, the organisers will distribute extension literature, leaflets, posters and digital awareness materials in local languages.
KVK Jaintia Hills and the partner departments have called on farmers, farm women, rural youth, Self-Help Groups (SHGs) and farmer organisations across both districts to participate in the training programmes and field demonstrations.
