The update, issued as an official government press release on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, confirmed that eight of the nine patients are improving and responding well to treatment. The index case, whose illness triggered the investigation, has died.
"Kenya's Ebola (Bundibugyo Virus Disease) response continues to hold firm. The Ministry of Health confirms one further case of the disease, bringing the total to nine (9) confirmed cases, including the first case, who died. The new case is a known contact of the index case and was already in quarantine when he fell ill. All nine cases belong to one cluster, and as today there is no evidence of transmission outside this group.
The ninth case, a 24-year-old man is also a close family member of the first case, was confirmed on 19th October. He was isolated at the first sign of illness, tested and started on treatment immediately upon confirmation of his positive test result," the statement read.
Contact tracing and quarantine efforts
Authorities have traced 134 of the 135 identified contacts, representing a tracing rate of 99.3%, well above the global benchmark of 85%. The remaining contact is yet to be accounted for. All traced individuals have been placed under quarantine as health officials work to prevent further spread of the disease.
To bolster the response, 500 doses of medicines have been received and distributed. Supplies have also been dispatched to 12 very high-risk counties and 16 high-risk counties across the country, broadening the preparedness net beyond the immediate outbreak zone.
Laboratory and treatment infrastructure
A dedicated laboratory has been established at the Kenyatta National Hospital Infectious Disease Unit to support rapid testing and case management as the outbreak response continues.
The Ministry emphasised that containment remains on track, with the cluster-based nature of all confirmed cases offering cautious grounds for confidence that transmission has not spread into the wider community. Health officials have not yet indicated when the first contacts are expected to complete their quarantine period, though the press release noted that the milestone is approaching.
