Nongstoin, Oct 16: Nongstoin in Meghalaya’s West Khasi Hills district has stepped up its waste management efforts with the inauguration of a Waste Recovery Centre and a renewed push for mandatory waste segregation.
Deputy Commissioner Hema Nayak inaugurated the facility at the DC Office complex near Trysem Hall on Thursday, marking the conclusion of the Swachhata Hi Seva 2026 campaign.
The centre aims to reduce the burden on local dumpsites and prevent waste from accumulating in public spaces and waterways. It is designed to handle four categories of waste: wet waste, dry recyclables, special-care waste and non-recyclable materials.
The district administration is also looking to turn waste management into an economic opportunity. Properly segregated recyclable materials can be sold to commercial recovery firms, creating potential income for local self-help groups (SHGs) and community committees.
For organic waste, the administration is working with the Department of Agriculture and the Meghalaya State Rural Livelihoods Society (MSRLS) to train farmers, Anganwadi centres and community groups in converting food scraps into organic manure. The compost is intended for use in school kitchen gardens and local farms.
To strengthen sanitation efforts, workers associated with the State Rural Livelihoods Mission (SRLM) were provided with protective equipment, including boots and gloves.
Additional Deputy Commissioner S. Marwein said maintaining cleanliness requires active public participation and personal responsibility, alongside the enforcement of rules.
The event also recognised institutions and localities for their sanitation efforts. Mawshynrut Police Station was named the cleanest police station, while Langpih Border Outpost received recognition as the cleanest border outpost. Maweit Primary Health Centre was named the cleanest health centre.
Pyndengrei Dong Tiehrit was recognised as the best-performing locality, while Nongstoin Town PHE Office received the award for best-performing office. Mount Hermon School was recognised for the World Painting Competition.
The administration also felicitated Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana–Urban beneficiaries Smti. Spilda Kharbani of Mawkhlam, Smti. Wimsilin Tympuin of Siejlieh and Smti. Brilliancy Marwein of Mawkawah.
