Period features still deemed 'most stylish' property features

Original features such as fireplaces, exposed beams, and cornicing are still considered the most stylish interior details, according to research.

The poll of 2,000 people also identified layered lighting, carefully chosen houseplants and antique furnishings as top signs of good taste in a home. However, viral décor trends such as panelling (26 per cent), patterned wallpaper (25 per cent) and bold paint colours (25 per cent) were listed as trends that didn’t feel quite right in practice. Three quarters (77 per cent) also believe a home is more aesthetically appealing when it reflects the person living there rather than simply following the latest trend.

The research was commissioned by Samsung to highlight the Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra, with Multi Window functionality and Creative Studio for comparing fabrics and building moodboards, with an accompanying S-Pen that makes it feel just like a pen and paper. To show how it can be done, interiors expert and presenter Michelle Ogundehin has appeared in a new video, giving aspiring designers the tools they need to upgrade their home design and style.

Michelle Ogundehin said: “Good taste is not a fixed look or a set of rules.

“The homes that feel most stylish right now are the ones with a bit of nerve – a colour you love, a piece with a story, something made by hand.

“The trick is seeing how it all comes together before you commit.

“By bringing your references, colours and ideas together visually, you can see what genuinely works for you and make braver choices with much more confidence.”

The survey found 52 per cent wished they were braver with their interior choices, but 38 per cent felt they needed to see how a finished room will look before committing. As 27 per cent struggled to know which colours would work together and 22 per cent found it difficult to bring multiple ideas together for one coherent look.

A quarter (25 per cent) also liked to compare several ideas or images side by side, with the same number keen to bring paint colours, fabrics and swatches together in one place, while another 19 per cent would prefer to plan their spaces on a bigger screen than their phone.

Charlie Nordfeldt, from Samsung UK and Ireland, said: “Our homes say so much about who we are, but turning an idea into a room that feels right isn’t always easy.

“Whether it’s choosing a bold paint colour, finding a place for a vintage find or reimagining a space that needs to work harder, people want to feel confident before they commit.”
