AMD FSR 4.1 expands to older Radeon GPUs and Ryzen handhelds as Xbox rollout approaches

AMD has brought FSR Upscaling 4.1 to Radeon RX 6000 graphics cards ahead of schedule. Its new Adrenalin 26.10.1 driver, released on October 20, adds official support for the company's RDNA 2 GPUs and selected Ryzen APUs. The announcement comes months before AMD's original early 2027 target for RX 6000 support.

The release follows a similar expansion to Radeon RX 7000 graphics cards in June. Those GPUs received FSR 4.1 through Adrenalin 26.6.2, which also arrived ahead of AMD's previously announced July launch window. With RX 6000 now included, AMD is extending its machine learning upscaler further down its existing graphics card line-up.

For integrated graphics, the new driver's support list specifically names Ryzen AI Max 300, Ryzen AI Max 400, Ryzen AI 9 300 and Ryzen AI 9 400 processors. The AI 9 distinction is important because it implies the AI 7 and AI 5 SKUs could miss out, which is, surprising, to say the least.

AMD had previously said it was developing lightweight machine learning models for APUs as part of its efforts to bring FSR 4.1 to more devices. The company has now provided a concrete list of supported processor families in its release notes. Handheld gaming PCs are also included in the expansion. AMD devices powered by the Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme, Ryzen Z2 Extreme and Ryzen Z2 A. However, availability on individual handhelds will depend on their manufacturers' drivers.

Steam Deck owners will have to wait for a separate confirmation. Unfortunately, AMD has not included Valve's handheld in its announced support list, although the Ryzen Z2 A's inclusion offers some encouragement. That processor shares the Deck's Zen 2 CPU architecture and RDNA 2. However, official Steam Deck support and a release timetable remain unconfirmed. Then again, even if AMD does leave the Steam Deck out, someone will almost certainly have Claude vibe code it into existence.

The release notes explicitly direct handheld owners to their device manufacturer for compatible software. Meanwhile, Xbox Series X and Series S support is listed as "coming soon" in AMD's announcement, with no specific release date in the accompanying description. This brings the current Xbox consoles into AMD's FSR 4.1 plans. Earlier versions of FSR are already available to Xbox developers through Microsoft's Game Development Kit.

AMD says its approach improves fine detail, temporal stability and ghosting compared with earlier FSR implementations. These improvements could be particularly useful on integrated graphics and handhelds, where demanding games often need lower rendering resolutions to maintain playable frame rates. Actual image quality and performance will still depend on the hardware, game and selected settings. The expansion specifically covers FSR Upscaling 4.1. Other machine learning features, including frame generation and ray regeneration, have separate hardware requirements, so their availability should be checked individually.
