GUWAHATI, Oct 16: Assam’s Rupsi, better known for its historic airfield, is emerging as a destination to watch, with travel searches surging 502% year-on-year, according to travel platform Skyscanner’s Trending Destinations list for 2027.
Located in Kokrajhar district, Rupsi ranks second on the list, behind Bishkek in Kyrgyzstan, which recorded a 748% increase in searches. The ranking puts the relatively lesser-known destination on the radar of travellers looking beyond conventional tourist hotspots.
The airport serves as an important transportation hub for nearby regions such as Gauripur, Kokrajhar, Dhubri, Golakganj, Bongaigaon, and Gossaigaon. The airport is equipped with an air traffic control system that ensures safe landings and take-offs. The runway at Rupsi Airport is 1,771 meters long.
The figures reflect a sharp rise in searches for return flights, rather than actual tourist arrivals, but they point to growing interest in destinations that have so far remained outside India’s mainstream travel circuit.
The average flying time from Guwahati to Rupsi Airport is around 40 minutes.
According to Skyscanner, its rankings are based on the year-on-year increase in return-flight searches between January 1 and June 17, 2026, for travel during 2026, followed by a selection based on travel suitability.
Rupsi’s aviation history dates back to World War II, when the airfield was built for military use. Revived under the Centre’s regional connectivity scheme, UDAN, the airport has the potential to improve access to western Assam and neighbouring areas.
The airport’s location in Dhubri district also places it within reach of the Brahmaputra’s riverine landscapes, rural settlements and the cultural traditions of western Assam. The wider region offers opportunities to develop tourism around local heritage, river-based experiences and the distinctive cultural life of the Brahmaputra valley.
Assam government has also announced plans to develop Rupsi as a logistics hub, adding another dimension to its potential role in regional connectivity and economic activity.
