Amazon $AMZN announced plans to invest more than €16 billion ($18 billion) in Germany in 2027, with the money going to data centers, AI infrastructure, its internet-from-space network, warehouse and delivery operations, and Prime Video programming, the company said on Tuesday.
Amazon made the announcement at the Invest in Germany Summit, hosted by the federal government in Berlin. Of the total, €4.8 billion will go toward expanding the AWS Europe (Frankfurt) Region to meet customer demand for cloud and AI services.
"Germany is a hub of innovation and one of the most attractive investment opportunities in Europe," said David Zapolsky, Amazon's chief global affairs and legal officer, who appeared with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz at the summit.
Katherina Reiche, Germany's federal minister for economic affairs and energy, called the investment "a clear vote of confidence in Germany as a location for the future."
Amazon is opening a second robotics and AI research lab in Berlin, giving it twice the research footprint it has in the city today. The company said the lab will hire applied scientists and robotics hardware, software and systems engineers.
The plan also covers Amazon Leo, a satellite network in low Earth orbit that Amazon says will provide internet access in areas existing networks do not reach, including parts of Germany. Amazon Leo has secured 24 launches with the European provider Arianespace.
On logistics, Amazon said it will wrap up upgrades to the Bad Hersfeld, Dortmund and Werne fulfillment centers in 2027. Work in Koblenz, Pforzheim and Rheinberg will continue through 2028. Amazon is opening a fulfillment center in Zweibrücken this year and is building another in Könnern. The company said these previously announced logistics projects account for more than 3,000 new jobs.
Prime Video has more than 15 productions coming to Germany through the end of 2027, Amazon said. They include the film “Der erste letzte Tag” (“The First Last Day”), based on a novel by Sebastian Fitzek.
"We have already created over 40,000 permanent jobs, built more than 100 sites, and invested more than €100 billion in Germany—and we are far from done," said Rocco Bräuniger, Amazon Germany country manager.
Amazon said it has invested more than €100 billion in Germany since 2010. Earlier this year, the company committed €33.7 billion to Spain, with spending on cloud and data center capacity running until 2035.
