GHOSTS IN ZAMBIAN HOSPITALS? THE TRUTH THEY DON’T WANT YOU TO KNOW.
Every hospital has a ghost story. The nurse who walks the corridors at night. The baby that cries in the empty ward. The patient who died but was seen sitting on their bed the next morning. You have heard the stories. You have told them. You have believed them.
THE ZAMBIAN HOSPITAL GHOST: THE STORY OF GWEMBE
In December 2018, a story spread across Zambia that made national news.
At Makuyu Clinic in Gwembe District, health workers were living in fear. For months, they reported a female ghost masquerading as a nurse. The ghost was said to harass health workers at their homes eating their eggs, sprinkling mealie meal on the ground, drinking their milk.
Then, one night, a woman delivered a baby around 8 PM. The baby went missing. A search was mounted. Around 2 AM, they found the alleged ghost woman holding the baby. Someone managed to take a photograph. The ghost woman laid the baby on the bed and then walked straight through the wall and disappeared .
Some people said the ghost resembled a health worker who had died. Some said they could identify her because she was wearing the clothes she was buried in .
This is not a story from a horror movie. This is a reported event in Zambia.
WHAT IS ACTUALLY HAPPENING: THE SCIENCE OF “GHOSTS”
Here is the truth that the ghost stories hide.
The “ghosts” that patients and health workers see are not spirits. They are hallucinations. And hallucinations have causes. Causes that are medical. Causes that are environmental. Causes that are real.
1. ICU Delirium (Intensive Care Unit Syndrome)
A patient in the Intensive Care Unit is surrounded by machines. They are on strong medication. They are sleep-deprived. They are terrified. And their brain is breaking.
This is called ICU delirium. Patients experience visual hallucinations, auditory hallucinations, confusion, and disorientation. They see people who are not there. They hear voices that do not exist.
2. Sleep Paralysis
You wake up. You cannot move. You cannot speak. You feel a weight on your chest. You see a figure in the corner of the room. You are terrified.
This is sleep paralysis. It happens when your brain wakes up before your body does. Your mind is conscious, but your muscles are still paralysed from REM sleep. And in that state between dreaming and waking, your brain produces hypnagogic and hypnopompic hallucinations.
The “ghost” sitting on your chest is your own brain, terrified and half-asleep.
3. The Power of Suggestion
You are in a hospital. Someone told you the ward is haunted. The nurse before you said she saw a figure. The cleaner said a bed moved on its own. You are already afraid. Your brain is already looking for the ghost.
And then you see it. A shadow. A flicker. A shape in the corner of your eye. Your brain fills in the gaps. It makes a ghost out of a curtain, a spirit out of a shadow.
The ghost is not in the room. The ghost is in your mind.
SO, ARE THERE GHOSTS IN ZAMBIAN HOSPITALS?
No.
But there are hallucinations. There is fear. There is trauma.
The nurse who sees a figure in the corridor is not crazy. She is exhausted. She is possibly overworked.
The patient who sees a ghost at the foot of their bed is not cursed. They are on medication. They are sleep-deprived. They are terrified. And their brain is doing what brains do when they are pushed to the limit.
The hospital is not haunted.
WHAT YOU SHOULD ACTUALLY DO
1. If you see a ghost in the hospital, tell a doctor.
It might be a hallucination caused by medication, infection, or delirium. It might be a sign of something serious. Do not hide it. Do not pray it away. Tell a doctor.
2. If you are a health worker and you are afraid, speak up.
You are not weak. You are human. The hospital is a stressful place. You need support. You need rest. You need someone to talk to. Do not suffer in silence.
3. Stop spreading the ghost stories.
Every time you tell a ghost story about a hospital, you are adding to the fear. You are making patients more terrified. You are making health workers more anxious. The ghost is not real. But the fear is. And the fear is harmful.
4. Demand better hospitals.
A well-lit hospital with enough staff and clean corridors does not produce ghost stories. A dark, understaffed, under-resourced hospital does. The ghosts are a symptom.
THE BOTTOM LINE
There are no ghosts in Zambian hospitals.
There are hallucinations. There is fear. There is exhaustion.
The “ghost” you see is your brain, your medication, or your terror.
Do not fear the ghost. Do not fear Hospitals.
