KUALA LUMPUR: A 20-year-old Chinese national pleaded not guilty at the sessions court here today to two charges of causing grievous hurt by stabbing his ex-girlfriend and her younger brother with a knife last month.
Chen Jun, a university student, is accused of causing grievous hurt to Leong Kai Ting, 21, and her younger brother, Leong Shun Jie, 18, by stabbing them both with a knife.
He is charged with committing the offences at a house in Taman Sri Bintang, Kepong, at 5am on Sept 29.
The charges were brought under Section 326 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum prison term of 20 years. Individuals are also liable to a fine or caning, upon conviction.
Deputy public prosecutor Nurainizatul Farhana Zainal did not propose bail, saying the offences were non-bailable.
"Should the court decide to grant bail, the prosecution requests that it be set at RM8,000 with two local sureties, and that the accused surrender his passport to the court," she said.
Chen Jun's lawyer, Ling Yee Siew, appealed for a lower bail amount, saying her client was pursuing a finance degree at a private university and was not a flight risk.
Ling also said the Chinese national suffered from depression, citing a medical report from a private hospital dated Sept 14.
"I therefore seek lower bail to enable him to obtain follow-up treatment for a leg injury he sustained through self-harm while experiencing depression," she said.
Chen Jun appeared in court in a wheelchair.
Judge Suhaila Haron granted him bail of RM8,000 with two Malaysian sureties, subject to the prosecution's additional conditions, and fixed Nov 11 for case mention.
