Tuesday marked quite the baptism into electrifying European nights at Anfield for Andoni Iraola. Liverpool had to mount one of their trademark comebacks to overturn a 2-0 deficit and emerge as comfortable winners, preserving their flawless UEFA Champions League record.
In the process, 18-year-old Rio Ngumoha offered another captivating preview of his exceptional promise with two assists and a spectacular man-of-the-match performance. Ngumoha stood out as the most thrilling and explosive player on the field, while Alexis Mac Allister netted twice, with Ronald Araújo and Florian Wirtz also finding the scoresheet in an exhilarating back-and-forth match.
Liverpool bosses throughout history have had their tenures measured as triumphant or disappointing based on their European campaigns. There's an inherent expectation at Anfield given the club's rich heritage and achievements, coupled with a storied legacy of memorable European occasions.

However, it remains risky for any manager to take the gamble that Iraola did by benching all three of his £100 million ($133.8 million) stars - Bradley Barcola, Alexander Isak, and Wirtz - who started among the substitutes. That decision revealed plenty about Liverpool's mindset as they confronted Villarreal while already partially focused on Brighton and Hove Albion this weekend, as per The Mirror.
Sure, it's only the league phase of the Champions League, but you certainly don't anticipate needing dramatic Anfield comebacks at this early juncture.
At least supporters were treated to an entertaining and gripping game, which isn't always guaranteed in this league format. Villarreal supplied the danger, while Liverpool contributed the mistakes and a breathtaking back-and-forth spectacle.
The opening Villarreal goal arrived within 4 minutes. Villarreal defender Renato Veiga launched a long ball forward, Virgil van Dijk was badly caught out through sheer complacency, misplaced a header, and that handed striker Georges Mikautadze the opportunity to dart in and drive a low effort past goalkeeper Alisson Becker.
That silenced Anfield in an instant. Things deteriorated rapidly. Nathan Saliba's pass carved open the Liverpool backline, Kostas Tsimikas played Segi Cardona onside, and the Villarreal defender slid the ball beyond Alisson. Liverpool were completely all over the place.

Then after 36 minutes, they dragged themselves back into the game. Tsimikas' near-post corner was flicked into the net by Mac Allister. The fact that Mac Allister appeared to be the smallest player on the pitch speaks volumes about the quality of the marking.
Deep into first-half stoppage time, Liverpool were level. Ngumoha, the teenage darling of the Kop, delivered a delightful, inviting cross to the back post and, while Cardona hesitated, Reds defender Araújo stole in to head home.
However, Araújo's reward was to be withdrawn at the break as Iraola introduced Wirtz in his place to pursue an all-out offensive approach. Iraola's boldness paid dividends.
Following several close calls, Liverpool just found a way. Or, more accurately, Ngumoha did. The Liverpool winger charged down the right flank, used his speed and power to beat two defenders, pulled the ball back, and there was Mac Allister to hammer it home.
Moments later, it was 4-2. Cody Gakpo laid the ball back for Wirtz, who struck it home into the far corner. Liverpool were then handed a late fright as Villarreal substitute Tani Oluwaseyi grabbed a third for the visitors to create a nervous finale.
