These 9 Dress Trends Are About to Be Everywhere This Fall

The biggest fall 2026 dress trends are breathing new life into the wardrobe staple. The silhouettes that carried shoppers through warm summer days are getting cool-weather updates in richer fabrics, moodier colors, and more substantial proportions that feel just as right with boots, tights, and a jacket as they once did with sandals.

Texture helps make the transition. Leather and velvet fabrics bring weight and dimension to dresses this season, while autumnal shades like royal and eggplant purple offer an alternative to summer’s brighter palette. Prints are getting appropriately moody, too, appearing in subdued color combinations that feel more suited for a crisp fall afternoon than a springtime garden party. Meanwhile, longer hemlines and sleeves provide some much-needed coverage as temperatures drop without sacrificing the ease of a one-and-done outfit.

That doesn’t mean fall’s dress trends are all serious business, no play. With holiday parties and winter wedding season on the horizon, designers are embracing plenty of drama. Metallic finishes will convince you to get a head start on festive dressing, while gothic lace brings a darker romance to the season. Ruffles, too, are showing up in designs that are more sophisticated than sweet, adding movement and interest to otherwise straightforward silhouettes.

Minimalists have plenty to choose from as well. The ’90s supermodel slip dress continues its comeback, offering a sleek option that works just as well layered under a sweater or blazer for the office as it does on its own after hours. One-shoulder dresses take an equally pared-back approach, using an asymmetric neckline rather than embellishment to make an impact.

Ahead, nine of the best 2026 dress trends to wear throughout fall and winter.

Velvet Underground

Few fabrics can make a dress feel as luxurious as velvet. This season, designers are using it on every style, from minimalist column dresses for every day to fluidly draped silhouettes made for a night out. The plush fabric does most of the work, meaning you can keep accessories relatively simple.

Purple Reign

Royal purple is reclaiming its color wheel throne. The saturated shade has an inherently regal quality, but this season’s dresses prove it doesn’t have to feel overly precious or formal. Look for streamlined silhouettes that give the historically opulent color a more modern attitude and pair with fall neutrals like black, brown, gray, and camel.

Leather Weather

The leather dress has come a long way from its tough-girl reputation. Designers are treating the material with a softer hand this season, resulting in styles ranging from polished midi dresses to feminine fit-and-flare shapes. The contrast between a traditionally edgy material and a ladylike silhouette makes the trend feel fresh; pair yours with knee-high boots for daytime, then swap in a sharp heel when the sun goes down.

Heavy Metal

Metallic dresses are getting an early start on party season, with silver, gold, bronze, and high-shine finishes turning the simplest of silhouettes into a holiday event. The key is letting the fabric be the focal point rather than piling on equally flashy extras. Finish with minimalist heels and understated jewelry. Or: go embellishment-free, treating the dress as it were jewelry.

Frill Seeker

Ruffles are turning up the volume this season, adding movement and drama to fall dresses. Rather than reading overly sweet, the best versions feel sculptural, cascading down skirts, adorning necklines, or appearing in unexpected asymmetrical placements. They’re particularly good for wedding-guest dressing when you want something special without resorting to sequins or sparkle.

Gothic Romance

Lace is heading to the dark side. Black lace dresses channel a romantic, slightly gothic mood for fall, whether as a sheer overlay or strategically placed panels. Depending on the silhouette, the effect can be Victorian, witchy, or sexy. Finish with a pointed shoe and minimal jewelry to keep the look more modern, less period dressing.

Dark Bloom

Florals aren’t disappearing along with summer—they’re getting moodier. Instead of cheerful ditsy prints, fall’s blooms arrive against black and other muted backgrounds. The result has all the femininity of a floral dress without feeling unseasonably spring-like. Ground one with boots and a coat to push the print even further into autumn territory.

Cold Shoulder

The one-shoulder dress is proof that you don’t need elaborate embellishment to make an entrance. An asymmetric neckline creates visual interest while maintaining the clean lines minimalists gravitate toward. The silhouette works for cocktail parties and weddings, where it lands somewhere between understated and statement-making. Keep the neckline bare and opt for earrings or a cuff instead of a necklace.

Supermodel Slip

The ’90s slip dress is once again ready for its close-up. Think less lingerie dressing, more Carolyn Bessette Kennedy and Kate Moss off-duty: clean lines, fluid fabrics, and an unfussy attitude. Its simplicity makes it a styling chameleon: wear it alone with barely-there heels at night or add a sweater and boots for a more relaxed take on the timeless trend.
