The Colorado Avalanche are off to a nice start this season but could not pick up a win on Wednesday night. They fell in the shootout to the Dallas Stars away from home. For star defenseman Cale Makar, the game meant a little bit more to him.
Makar missed Colorado’s win over the Stars on Tuesday due his wife going into labor. His twin sons weren’t born until Wednesday morning, and Makar elected to play the same night. It’s certainly been a whirlwind for the superstar defenseman, but he is overjoyed with life at the moment.
“Felt really good,” Makar said, via NHL.com. “I mean, it was a little bit different with the morning, that’s for sure. But felt really exciting, and it’s kind of a cool thought process. You have something to go back home to, so it’s pretty cool.”

Makar is one of the best defensemen in the NHL. He did not score a point on Wednesday night, but that’s certainly understandable given the circumstances. In 2027-28, he will become the NHL’s highest-paid player, and the first with a seasonal salary over $20 million.
The Avalanche and Stars went back and forth on Wednesday night. Colorado had two disallowed goals in the first period. They finally took the lead in the second before Dallas responded. Dallas took the lead in the third, but Brock Nelson tied it to force overtime.
This game ended in a shootout, with Roope Hintz serving as the hero for the Stars. It’s a tough night for the Avalanche, who certainly played well enough to win. Makar is now looking forward to raising his new family and giving them something to be proud of on the ice.
