The 49ers have played their sixth game of the season. That means owner Jed York has served his full suspension.
As the league explained when announcing the ban earlier this month, York may return on October 20.
York self-suspended for three games, and he got credit for those games when the league added three more. He also was fined $500,000.
Whether that means he’ll return to games immediately remains to be seen. The 49ers face the Falcons in Atlanta on Sunday before entering the annual bye.
The quarterly ownership meeting is set for New York on Tuesday and Wednesday. He’s now free to attend, if he chooses.
There’s still a basic and fundamental disconnect between owner and player suspensions when it comes to the financial realities of the punishment. Players, when suspended, lose all of their compensation and potentially have to repay money already received. Owners pay a fine that pales in comparison to the money they make.
Case in point: York lost $500,000 for his six-game suspension. For a one-game suspension due to sucker punching Bills linebacker Bradley Chubb, Rams tackle Alaric Jackson lost $934,555. And Bears defensive end Montez Sweat loses $2.18 million for his two-game suspension under the PED policy.
While the violations aren’t apples-to-apples (York’s suspension arose from an effort to harvest an apple from a poisonous tree at a trailer park), the numbers are the numbers.
One game for Jackson equals $934,555. Two games for Sweat equals $2.18 million. Six games for York equals $500,000.
It’s an obvious issue that few discuss. Which means there’s no chance of the approach ever changing.
