MOKOKCHUNG, Oct. 18: Government departments, civil society organisations and community groups have been urged to work together to improve routine immunisation and ensure that children receive their vaccinations on time.
The call was made at a convergence meeting organised by TATTVA Foundation in collaboration with UNICEF at the Chief Medical Officer’s conference hall in Mokokchung on October 16.
The meeting focused on improving vaccination coverage, addressing gaps in immunisation and strengthening community awareness about the importance of protecting children against vaccine-preventable diseases.
Deputy Chief Medical Officer Dr. Takosunep Ao, while welcoming participants, underscored the collective responsibility of stakeholders in safeguarding child health through vaccination.
Dr. Limanaro, District Programme Officer for the Universal Immunisation Programme (UIP) and Reproductive and Child Health (RCH), outlined the benefits of routine immunisation and explained the minor side effects that may follow vaccination.
She identified lack of awareness and misconceptions as major factors contributing to vaccine hesitancy, urging stakeholders to take an active role in educating communities.
Dr. Limanaro said improving immunisation coverage could not be left to the Medical Department alone and required coordinated efforts involving allied departments, civil society organisations and community institutions.
Wapang Imsong, district coordinator of TATTVA Foundation, presented the status of routine immunisation in the GAVI intervention block and highlighted factors contributing to children missing their scheduled doses.
Participants explored ways to incorporate immunisation awareness and support into existing programmes of the Education Department, Nagaland State Rural Livelihoods Mission, Integrated Child Development Services, Mokokchung Municipal Council, churches and civil society organisations.
The meeting emphasised the use of established community networks to reach families, address misconceptions about vaccines and help ensure children receive their vaccinations according to schedule.
Representatives of allied departments, civil society organisations and other stakeholders attended the meeting, along with members of the District Programme Management Unit and staff of the CMO’s office.
