The Lagos State Government has announced a traffic diversion on the Independence Bridge, Lagos Island, ahead of urgent repair works by the Federal Ministry of Works.
In a traffic advisory issued on Wednesday by the Ministry of Transportation, the state government said the asphalt works on the bridge will commence on Friday, October 16, 2026, at night, continue on Saturday, October 17, day and night, and be completed on Sunday, October 18, day and night.
According to the advisory signed by the Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, the traffic management plan includes a partial closure of each section of the bridge at a time, with one lane opened for motorists to access their destinations, on both inbound and outbound lanes.
Motorists were urged to plan their movement and make use of alternative routes to connect their desired destinations for the duration of the repairs.
The government added that officers of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) would be on ground to manage vehicular movement and minimize inconveniences.
“Motorists are implored to remain patient, obey traffic laws, and cooperate fully with the interventions made available,” the statement reads in part.
