Visitors to one of South Africa’s most popular national parks can expect a very different experience in some parts of the park this summer, with R136.5 million being invested in upgrades to Addo Elephant National Park.
The investment by SANParks is focused on improving tourism infrastructure, visitor facilities and the park’s operational sustainability.
Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment Minister David Maynier visited Addo on Monday, 19 October, to view the new facilities and construction projects currently underway. The upgrades come after years of concerns around the condition of some of the park’s basic infrastructure.
Maynier said the scale of the work currently underway was encouraging, with several facilities expected to be completed in time for the December holiday season.
New accommodation already open
The first of the new facilities are already available to visitors. SANParks revealed it has completed eight new modern family accommodation units, which are now open to the public.
SANParks has also completed comprehensive upgrades to the park’s bulk sewer and electrical infrastructure.
More accommodation is on the way, with additional new units and refurbished existing accommodation expected to be ready for visitors in December 2026. The upgrades will also include the reopening of a refurbished guest house and swimming pool.
For visitors looking for a little more relaxation after a day of game viewing, a new spa is already complete and operational.

New 10-unit lodge AND SOLAR coming to Addo
Another major addition is the new 10-unit Community Lodge. SANParks expects construction to be completed by December, although visitors won’t be able to book stays there immediately.
The official opening and start of operations are planned for January 2027. The lodge forms part of SANParks’ broader efforts to strengthen the tourism offering while also supporting surrounding communities.
The park is also getting a significant renewable-energy upgrade.
A 705-kW grid-tied solar plant has been completed and is expected to be commissioned in January 2027.
The project is intended to strengthen the park’s operational sustainability while reducing its reliance on conventional electricity.
This is particularly significant for a large national park such as Addo, where maintaining reliable electricity and other basic infrastructure can be challenging.
Roads are being maintained
Road maintenance is also underway as part of the broader investment. For safari visitors, road conditions are particularly important because Addo is heavily reliant on self-drive tourism.
The park’s network of tourist roads allows visitors to explore the wildlife areas in their own vehicles, making the condition of those roads an important part of the overall visitor experience. However, SANParks has acknowledged that the work is far from finished.
Despite all the progress, some facilities remain in need of urgent attention.
SANParks says ablutions and hiking trails are among the areas that will now be prioritised.
This follows feedback from visitors who spoke to Minister Maynier during his visit and highlighted the improvements they believe are necessary to bring Addo up to international standards.
The upgrades therefore aren’t simply about adding new accommodation. The broader goal is to improve the basic infrastructure and facilities that visitors rely on throughout their stay.
The investment also comes at an important time for Addo, which has become a popular alternative for visitors looking for a safari experience without travelling to the country’s northern wildlife destinations.
Unlike Kruger National Park, Addo is in the Eastern Cape and is particularly well known for its elephant population, although visitors can encounter a wide range of wildlife during a visit.
