A machine may have produced a proof on one of math’s most famous open problems. Now mathematicians are asking whether anyone actually understands it.
In October 2026, Harvard mathematics faculty weighed in on that question. It follows OpenAI’s claim that an internal AI system had tackled parts of the Navier-Stokes existence and smoothness problem. The faculty did not land in one place.
What OpenAI says it did
On September 8, 2026, OpenAI announced that a multi-agent AI system had addressed aspects of the Navier-Stokes problem. That problem is one of the Millennium Prize Problems named by the Clay Mathematics Institute.
The Navier-Stokes equations describe how fluids move. The open question is whether their solutions always stay well-behaved, or whether they can break down. That breakdown point is known as a singularity.
OpenAI says its system resolved two specific statements, labeled C and D, within the problem. The system allegedly built a proof involving a finite-time singularity scenario.
Around 10,000 AI agents ran at the same time for approximately 88 hours, starting around September 1, 2026. Those agents generated 2.7 million messages and approximately 130 billion output tokens.
OpenAI backed the claim with a 166-page report. It also formalized the work in Lean, a software tool that checks each logical step of a proof mechanically.
The company has said it is not pursuing the $1 million prize attached to the problem.
A priority fight and a fine-print problem
The announcement did not land quietly. NYU mathematician Tristan Buckmaster and Anthropic researcher Levent Alpöge had reported related developments hours before OpenAI went public.
The two accused OpenAI of drawing on their unpublished work. OpenAI denied any direct borrowing of data or prompts.
Buckmaster also alleged that OpenAI tried to exclude Alpöge from authorship discussions about the findings.
Expert reviews after the announcement suggested OpenAI’s proof may not extend to the unforced case. A forced formulation adds an outside push to the fluid. The unforced version, with no such push, is the case mathematicians have traditionally focused on.
As of late October 2026, experts noted the proof appears to rely on the forced formulation. The Clay Mathematics Institute is still reviewing the work.
The Harvard debate: correct versus understood
Some faculty acknowledged that AI could be effective at formalizing solutions. A machine that grinds through every case and has Lean verify each step can establish that something is true.
Others raised a sharper concern. A proof can show correctness without offering any deeper insight. If no person understands why the result holds, has mathematics actually advanced?
Professor Melanie Matchett Wood stressed that AI should complement human comprehension rather than replace it.
The interviews also showed a split on AI’s role in teaching. Faculty disagreed over how these tools should fit into instruction as well as research.
