Laika’s latest animated stop-motion story explores a fictional, mysterious, unurbanized stretch of land outside the city of Portland, Oregon.
The Impassable Wilderness, as it is called, has many lessons to teach heroine Prue McKeel (Peyton Elizabeth Lee) when she drags her classmate Curtis Mehlberg (Jacob Tremblay) into the woods shrouded in ivy to save her younger brother Mac (Arthur Knight) after a murder of crows swoops in and steals him away. The magical ivy that surrounds Wildwood isn’t supposed to let any Outsiders in, but Prue’s blood hints at a connection she and her brother have to the world without knowing it.
Based on the book of the same name written by The Decemberists frontman Colin Meloy, the Wildwood film brought about three new songs from Portland-based band, one of which plays during the credits of the movie. Meloy also wrote some songs sung by the Wildwood voice cast at various parts in the film.
