Julián Álvarez has publicly apologised to Atlético Madrid supporters for remarks he made during the 2026 World Cup.
Speaking to Movistar after scoring the winning goal in Atlético’s 1-0 victory over Deportivo La Coruña on Saturday, the Argentine forward said:
“I wanted to apologise to our fans for my words during the World Cup. They were a mistake. Both the way I said them and the timing. Especially because I understand why the fans were angry. I would have been angry too if I were a fan.”
Álvarez added that the supporters had been “very generous” despite the controversy and thanked his teammates for their backing.
He said he is gradually feeling better both physically and on the pitch and is ready to compete for everything with the club.
The comments in question came when Álvarez expressed that playing for Barcelona was a dream, which sparked tension with Atlético fans during the summer transfer window.
