The Pakistan Tax Bar Association (PTBA) has urged the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) to extend the 2026 income tax return filing deadline till December 2 because of persistent glitches in the IRIS portal, errors in return forms and problems with the minimum tax calculation formula.
In a letter to FBR Chairman Rashid Mahmood Langrial, the association said the extension of the deadline to October 15, granted through Circular No. 03 of 2026 on September 30, had not adequately addressed the difficulties faced by taxpayers and tax practitioners.
PTBA said technical problems with the IRIS portal and delays in fixing errors in return formats continued to disrupt the filing process. It also highlighted the time required to update immovable property details and provide International Bank Account Numbers (IBANs) for bank accounts.
The association said it and its affiliated district tax bar associations had repeatedly urged the FBR to align the return filing mechanism with the Income Tax Ordinance and relevant rules, while removing unnecessary procedural and technical hurdles.
PTBA also raised concerns over the minimum tax calculation formula used in the return filing system. According to the association, the formula was being applied incorrectly in certain cases involving taxpayers under the minimum tax regime who also earned income from another source on which tax was not required to be deducted under that regime.
The association said it had raised the issue with relevant authorities through emails, electronic and print media, other forums, and meetings via Zoom with the FBR chairman, members and the Pakistan Revenue Automation Limited (PRAL) team.
Despite repeated representations and a consensus among stakeholders that the disputed formula was inapplicable in the identified circumstances, the association said FBR had yet to take corrective action.
PTBA requested an extension until December 2 to give taxpayers and tax practitioners sufficient time to file returns in accordance with the law.
It also called on FBR to correct the minimum tax calculation formula and resolve the remaining technical problems in the return forms.
