Devastating fire destroyed materials stored at an ice-cream businessman's warehouse in Padmapur Harichand Road area of Dharmanagar in North Tripura district on Sunday, with the owner, Lakhindar Sahani, claiming a loss of around Rs 50 lakh.
The fire broke out at around noon, according to local sources. A preliminary assessment suggests that an electrical short circuit may have triggered the blaze.
The fire spread rapidly, triggering panic in the densely populated area. Local villagers rushed to the spot and joined efforts to douse the flames using buckets of water. They also alerted the fire service.
A fire engine reached the spot soon after receiving the information. Firefighters, assisted by local villagers, battled the blaze for around one-and-a-half hours before bringing it under control.
However, the materials stored in the warehouse for manufacturing ice cream were completely destroyed before the fire could be extinguished.
Sahani said the incident had caused an estimated financial loss of around Rs 50 lakh. The exact extent of the damage has not been independently established.
Although an electrical short circuit is suspected to have caused the fire, the actual cause of the incident remains to be ascertained. The precise extent of the losses is also yet to be determined.
