Carrilho’s winning piece was published in the Portuguese newspaper Público last year.
The cartoon addresses the role of a “supposedly civilised” society as a spectator of what the artist describes as “constant barbarity” in Gaza, SIC Notícias reports.
Victims and Villains
The World Press Cartoon competition featured 138 cartoonists from 44 countries, with works divided into three categories: Editorial Cartoon, Humorous Drawing and Caricature.
This year’s competition focused on the theme “Victims and Villains”, with US President Donald Trump appearing in several of the submitted works.
International perspectives on current events
The World Press Cartoon Oeiras 2026 exhibition is on display at Palácio Anjos in Algés, Oeiras, from 17 October 2026 to 24 January 2027, showcasing 281 cartoons by artists from around the world.
For the second consecutive year, Oeiras is hosting the internationally recognised exhibition, which brings together different perspectives on current events, highlighting international politics, wars and the challenges of artificial intelligence through humour and satire.
The exhibition includes depictions of political leaders, historical figures, athletes, filmmakers, musicians and religious figures, and it offers visitors an opportunity to explore how artists from different countries interpret political, cultural and social themes.
Exhibition on European history
Alongside the main exhibition, visitors to Palácio Anjos can view 40 additional works dedicated to themes related to the European Union.
The additional European exhibition marks the 40th anniversary of Portugal’s accession to the European Communities, which took place in 1986.
