Singer Amritprabha Mahanta walked out of Haflong Sub-Jail at around 6:30 am on Tuesday after the Gauhati High Court granted her conditional bail in connection with the death of renowned Assamese singer Zubeen Garg.
Mahanta was granted bail on October 9 on a bond of Rs 50,000. Her family members had arrived at the jail on Monday ahead of her release. After completing the necessary formalities, she left the prison premises in a black Mahindra Thar vehicle.
The court has imposed conditions on her release, including restrictions on leaving her hometown and a requirement to cooperate with the ongoing legal proceedings.
Mahanta was arrested during the investigation into Garg’s death in Singapore on September 19, 2025. The singer, aged 52, died after getting into difficulty while swimming in the sea off Saint John’s Island.
Following widespread public demands for a thorough investigation, the Assam government constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the circumstances surrounding his death. The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) subsequently registered a case in connection with the incident.
In December 2025, the SIT filed a chargesheet naming Mahanta, festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, Garg’s manager Siddhartha Sharma and musician Shekhar Jyoti Goswami among those facing murder charges. Several other individuals were also charged with various offences in connection with the case.
Separately, a coroner’s inquiry into Garg’s death was conducted in Singapore. In March 2026, the Singapore coroner ruled that the singer died from accidental drowning and found no evidence of foul play.
Mahanta’s release on bail comes as legal proceedings in the high-profile case continue to draw significant public attention across Assam.
