The Philadelphia Eagles are facing another difficult week, and recent developments have made their game against the Carolina Panthers even more complicated. Jalen Hurts has been ruled out of Sunday's game after the team announced that he is dealing with a superficial blood clot. Philadelphia has also said it is determining the appropriate course of treatment, emphasizing, as it should, that its franchise quarterback's health and safety are the utmost priority.
Everyone hopes Hurts makes a full recovery, but his absence creates an immediate football problem for a team already searching for answers. The Eagles have lost three consecutive games, and now Tanner McKee is expected to take over at quarterback in Week 6. He has two career starts and has completed 54 of 88 passes for 597 yards, five touchdowns, and one interception.
However, replacing Hurts in the middle of a difficult stretch presents a significant challenge. His medical emergency understandably dominates the conversation, but it isn't the only factor that could shape Sunday's outcome. Here are a few factors that will determine Week 6's outcome. Each issue tests a team that needs to stop its slide in a different way.
Can the Eagles shake off the London hangover against a Panthers team exiting a bye week?
Returning from an international game can disrupt sleep patterns and routines, forcing players and coaches to adjust after crossing several time zones. Philadelphia has had time to readjust since returning from London, but the Eagles have another concern heading into their game against Carolina: rest.
They have had just seven days between games, while the Panthers enter Week 6 with more rest. They haven't played since October 4th. The travel adjustment may be behind them, but the less-discussed rest disparity could still influence Sunday's matchup.
Can Nick Sirianni steady the locker room?
The Eagles have seen significant leadership changes, with Cam Jurgens gone and Lane Johnson retired. Jordan Mailata, Zack Baun, Jake Elliott, and others remain, but the personnel changes, consecutive losses, and Hurts' unexpected absence create an unfamiliar situation for the team.
This is where Sirianni's leadership matters most. His ability to keep the locker room focused and maintain belief in the team's direction could matter as much as any tactical adjustment. With McKee preparing to start, Philadelphia needs clarity from its coaching staff and confidence from the players around him. A strong response would let Sirianni show he can guide the team through adversity, something that has long been one of his calling cards.
Can special teams restore confidence?
Jake Elliott has had a productive start to the season, and Braden Mann has been one of Philadelphia's more consistent performers. However, the special teams unit enters this matchup with questions after a costly kickoff decision helped fuel the loss to Jacksonville in London.
The Eagles must avoid allowing that mistake to influence their next decisions. Special teams can change field position and scoring opportunities in seconds, so disciplined execution will be essential. Philadelphia needs to make sound decisions, avoid costly penalties, and trust its preparation rather than play cautiously out of fear of repeating the previous week's mistake.
The Eagles have more than one problem to solve against Carolina, and Hurts' absence makes the margin for error even smaller. McKee's performance will draw attention, but the team's response will depend on more than the quarterback position. If Philadelphia handles the travel, finds leadership in a changing locker room, and executes cleanly on special teams, it will give itself a better chance to end its losing streak.
