The New York Knicks had a special performance in the 2026 NBA Playoffs, which led to their first championship in over 50 years. Now that the 2026-27 NBA season has started, it began with a championship banner night for the Knicks at home in Madison Square Garden.
Unfortunately, for the Knicks, their special night was spoiled by LeBron James and the Philadelphia 76ers. It was not the best performance from either team, but the 76ers came away with a big victory in the first night of their new era with James and Jaylen Brown as their newest stars.
Mike Brown is not pleased with the Knicks' performance on Banner Night
As the defending champions, the Knicks were under pressure to perform during their special Banner Night. They had a special celebration, including the jerseys they wore had gold letters and numbers to commemorate the achievement they earned.
Unfortunately, the on-court product did not fit the occasion because the Knicks struggled. They lost in a 106-100 game, as Jalen Brunson struggled from the field while Karl-Anthony Towns dealt with foul trouble almost all game.

They did combine for 40 points, but they were outplayed, particularly in the second half. Tyrese Maxey walked away from the game with the best performance, as he scored 28 points to lead all scorers. However, Knicks head coach Mike Brown acknowledged that it was an ugly game all around.
"What an ugly game. I want to give the 76ers, Nick Nurse, and his team a lot of credit. Long night for them, and they did what they had to do to get a win... All throughout the game, it looked like we were running in mud. We were not good at getting to our spots and putting pressure on Philadelphia," Brown said in his post-game press conference after opening night.
It is a disheartening loss to start the season, and the matchups don't get easy because they will have the Boston Celtics to play against on Saturday. This is the life of being NBA champions, and the Knicks will know that they need to adjust as soon as they can to establish their championship defense better.
