The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Sierra Leone, in partnership with the Ministry of Youth Affairs and the Armed Forces Technical and Education College (AFTEC), has launched an orientation programme for 100 prospective drivers under the Sierra Ride electric mobility initiative.
The initiative aims to promote sustainable transportation, create employment opportunities for young people and introduce electric vehicles into Sierra Leone’s urban transport system.
The selected participants will undergo a two-week training programme designed to equip them with practical skills in electric vehicle operations, road safety, charging systems and vehicle management.
Following the training, an initial fleet of 50 electric vehicles is expected to operate in Freetown as part of efforts to advance cleaner and more sustainable mobility in the capital.
The Sierra Ride initiative brings together environmental sustainability, youth empowerment and technological innovation, with a focus on preparing young people to participate in the emerging electric mobility sector.

Through the programme, the organisers aim to strengthen local capacity in electric vehicle operations while creating opportunities for young Sierra Leoneans to develop skills relevant to the evolving transportation industry.
The initiative marks a step towards expanding the use of electric vehicles in Sierra Leone, while linking the transition to cleaner transportation with youth employment and skills development.
